A group of criminals who remain at large carried out an armed robbery last night on the bridge over the Vanduzi River, along National Road No. 6, in Manica Province. They shot and killed a young man, stole around 500,000 meticais and blocked the road with a tire deflation device (TDD), a metal-spiked strip as a “lagarta”.
Eunice Faustino, press officer for the Provincial Command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), said that the victim and three other people were travelling in a Honda Fit in the direction of Chimoio–Manica when they were intercepted by four robbers travelling in a Toyota Axio and armed with a firearm whose type has not yet been identified.
The robbers demanded that the victims hand over their belongings. When one of the Honda Fit’s occupants resisted, the assailants opened fire on him and took around 500,000 meticais.
Following the robbery, other vehicles travelling along the same road also had their tyres punctured after driving over the devices left at the scene. So far, no one has been formally detained in connection with the case.
Meanwhile, the three survivors who had been travelling in the victims’ vehicle were in police custody at the PRM District Command in Vanduzi. A sum of US$11,000 was found inside the vehicle belonging to the deceased.
