Toni Basil made a rare public appearance on October 22, 2026, as the 83-year-old, known for her hit 1982 single "Mickey (Hey Mickey)," received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Gala of the Stars benefiting Dancers Against Cancer.
The legendary dancer and choreographer, who has worked with Quentin Tarantino, Princess Grace of Monaco, and David Bowie, did not walk the red carpet but appeared on stage to accept the award.

Wearing a cheetah-print fur coat and her trademark fedora with floral appliqués, Toni was full of life, telling stories from the past and quipping at the end: "That's another book!" She revealed that she is still dancing, and that "every night I go into my little dance studio and I look for a morsel of a step that I can fill into my dwindling repertoire.

During her speech, Toni revealed that she and her friend Bianca wrote the now iconic Mickey chant outside a Los Angeles high school, but the record label had to be brought "kicking and screaming" into agreement. Their perseverance paid off, and the song went to number one – but the pair never received any royalties because the label copywrote the hook before Toni and Bianca could.
"So, you have to keep pounding away at what you feel, creatively…. Paula [Abdul] is standing here nodding, and you know what the problem is? They cannot envision anything they've never seen."
Toni worked with big names across five decades
Toni found fame in the dance world at 21 as she assisted choreographer David Winters for Steve Binder's concert film T.A.M.I. Show, a live concert featuring the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Chick Berry, Marvin Gaye, and Diana Ross. The show was selected for preservation in 2006 in the National Film Registry after being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the US Library of Congress.
