KOTA KINABALU: Fines for electricity supply offences in Sabah have totalled RM2.23 million from 2024 to October this year.
Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said the amount reflected the commission's firm enforcement of electricity supply laws in the state.
The cases comprised 28 involving illegal electricity connections, 19 involving electricity meter tampering, two related to electric shock accidents and one involving the supply of electricity without a licence.
"For 2026 alone, 50 conviction records were recorded up to October, involving fines totalling RM1,601,800.
"This compares with eight conviction records involving RM160,000 in fines in 2024 and 23 conviction records involving RM465,000 in fines in 2025," he said.
Another 41 cases were still being prosecuted, while 33 were being processed for compound action, he said.
Abdul Nasser said Sabah Electricity's estimated losses from electricity theft and meter-tampering cases resulting in convictions amounted to RM9.49 million.
He said the losses highlighted the financial impact of the offences, adding that ECoS would continue to take action against those responsible.
