Kokrajhar, Oct 16: The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) has warned that the removal of the Bodo-language nameplate from the Assam Legislative Assembly building could revive the demand for a separate Bodoland state, accusing the move of undermining the dignity and identity of the Bodo community.
In a press statement issued from Bodofa House in Kokrajhar, ABSU president Kwrwmdao Wary and general secretary Khanindra Basumatary described the alleged removal as a symbolic act of exclusion from Assam’s political and cultural identity.
The organisation said Bodo is recognised under the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution and argued that the language deserves due recognition in public institutions.
“The removal of the Bodo language nameplate from the Assam Legislative Assembly building is a deeply symbolic act that many in the Bodo community interpret as a denial of dignity and recognition,” the statement said.
ABSU said the incident had revived memories of historical marginalisation despite decades of democratic struggle for linguistic recognition and territorial autonomy. It warned that such actions could deepen alienation among the Bodo people and reinforce perceptions of unequal treatment within Assam.
The student body also raised concerns over the potential legal and political implications, arguing that the removal could invite scrutiny in light of constitutional guarantees of equality and linguistic recognition.
Drawing parallels with India’s linguistic reorganisation of states and the formation of Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland, ABSU said the denial of cultural and linguistic identity had historically fuelled demands for separate statehood in different parts of the country.
“Bodoland statehood is an option for securing the dignity and respect for literary and cultural existence in India. ABSU may be bound to re-think the idea of existence with Assam,” Wary said in the statement.
The organisation warned that failure to respect Bodo linguistic identity could force it to reconsider its political position and renew the demand for a separate state.
ABSU maintained that the issue went beyond the removal of a nameplate, describing it as a question of historical justice, constitutional recognition and the dignity of tribal communities.
The development comes amid renewed debate over the status and recognition of Bodo in Assam’s official institutions. The circumstances surrounding the alleged removal of the nameplate and the state government’s position on the matter remain key issues in the unfolding controversy.
