BHOJPUR: Mahadevthan, a historic religious site on the banks of the Kawa River in Ward 1 of Hatuwagadhi Rural Municipality, Bhojpur, is being developed as a religious tourism destination through conservation initiatives and infrastructure improvements.
The local government has launched development initiatives to improve access to the site, which is known for its natural beauty, caves, statues of various Hindu deities, and religious significance.
Located at the junction of Hatuwagadhi, Ramprasad Rai, and Pauwadung rural municipalities, Mahadevthan holds considerable potential for religious tourism. Its importance has grown in recent years as the rural municipality has prioritised temple conservation and the construction of essential infrastructure.
The rural municipality has built a pathway with iron railings within the temple premises and expanded the access road to make travel more convenient for visitors. Hatuwagadhi Rural Municipality Chairman Prem Kumar Rai said conservation, management, and development activities were being carried out through the Mahadev Than Conservation Committee.
“Mahadev Than is an important religious and tourist destination in this area,” Rai said. “We are working to develop the necessary infrastructure while preserving its historical, religious, and cultural significance. Progress in conservation has also made the site more accessible to devotees.”
The local fair, which had remained suspended for a long period for various reasons, has recently resumed through community initiatives. Since the rural municipality introduced rituals involving worship and the sowing of auspicious seeds in 2080 BS, religious activities at the site have gained momentum. Special events, including fairs, worship services, and devotional singing, are organised during Bala Chaturdashi.
Local resident Lal Bahadur Pradhan said the area’s natural features, particularly its cave formations, had enhanced its appeal. He added that devotees from different places visit the site, believing that worshipping there would help fulfil their wishes.
The temple premises feature statues of various deities alongside the cave, combining religious heritage with natural attractions. Kumar Bista, ward chairman of Hatuwagadhi Rural Municipality-1, said this combination had made Mahadev Than an important destination from a tourism perspective.
Bista said the ward and rural municipality were continuing efforts to protect the temple and improve local infrastructure. He added that the systematic development of the historically and religiously significant site could strengthen the area’s identity, attract more domestic tourists, and contribute to the local economy.
