Nebraska 3-Northwestern 0: 25-17, 25-14, 25-15
The weather might finally be starting to feel like fall in Lincoln, but the Huskers are still red hot as they kept their undefeated record afloat tonight against Northwestern. Today’s match was still a sweep, but looked less dominant than Saturday’s. It almost looked like they overlooked the match a little.
Manaia Ogbechie did not make the trip to Northwestern as she came down with the flu. This is her second illness that has kept her out of competition this season. The last time was against Creighton in September. This meant that Kenna Cogill got her 2nd career start tonight.
The first two sets looked a little rough for the Huskers. It just seemed like they were all there tonight. It was kind of like they were overlooking tonight’s match and thinking more about the Purdue match on Saturday.
Bergen Reilly and Virginia Adriano were two that really stood out with their struggles. Some of Reilly’s sets were just off which messed up her connections. Adriano was just hitting too long, but also hitting into the net. She couldn’t find that sweet spot and stay there.
Even though there were struggles, they always seemed to figure it out quick and go on a run to take the lead back in the set. Northwestern was up by at least 4 points, at one point in the 2nd, and the Huskers battled back to tie and take the lead.
A lot of bench girls got some playing time tonight, mainly in the 3rd set. Keoni Williams, Skyler Pierce, Keri Leimbach, Jayden Robinson, and Gabby DiVita all got some minutes in the 3rd.
For Nebraska’s standards, they did not have the best hitting night. They had 15 hitting errors, 5 every set, and only hit .287%. This team is used to being, at least, above .300% in most matches. Especially matches against teams lower in the standings of the conference.
Andi Jackson, Harper Murray, and Teraya Sigler were once again at the top of the scoresheet tonight. Jackson with 10 kills, Murray with 9 and Sigler with 8. Jackson hit the team high, with 4 or more kills, of .600%.
Since a lot of bench players got in tonight, there were plenty of kills to go around. Pierce had 4, DiVita had 3, Williams had 2, and Reilly added one of her own.
Cogill had 3 kills, but hit in the negative tonight because of her 4 errors. Adriano had 2 kills of her own, but also hit in the negative because of her 3 errors.
Even though Cogill struggled on offense tonight, she was lights out on defense with the team high of 7 blocks. Jackson was right behind her with 6.
Nebraska’s serving game still showed that it is one of the best in the country though. They had 9 aces tonight and 3 of those belonged to Reilly. They also had 8 errors that helped Northwestern stay in the match just a little too long.
The Huskers will travel back to Lincoln tonight and start to prepare for the Purdue Boilermakers to come into the Devaney Center on Saturday night. That match is set to being at 4:00pm CST and will be televised on B1G. Make sure you get your nap in after that match before football kicks off at 10:00pm CST!
