Lula, Brazil’s president, and Flávio Bolsonaro, the conservative senator for Rio de Janeiro, will meet in the first runoff debate on Sunday 18 October at 7 p.m. ET. One of the two mediators, journalist Adriana Araújo, said on Friday that the debate will put the direct clash between the two candidates first.
The vote in the Brazil election 2026 runoff comes a week later, on Sunday 25 October, and the latest Brazil election polls show a tight race. The debate is on TV Band, one of Brazil’s largest broadcasters, and matters to investors in Brazilian stocks, the real and US-listed Brazilian shares.
What the Band Debate Will Look Like
Araújo told UOL News the aim is a debate that lets voters compare the two candidates’ positions on government programmes and proposals, Tribuna Online reported. She said she expects it to run about 1 hour 45 minutes.
She added that criticising an opponent is not enough to win voters’ trust, and that candidates should use the time to say what they would do in office. The mediators must stay calm and step in if the rules are broken, she said.
Band is organising the debate with the Estadão news site and a pool of the broadcasters TV Cultura, Gazeta and Jovem Pan, Diário de Pernambuco reported on 6 October. The debate was first planned for 11 October and moved to 18 October.
How the Debate Came Together
Flávio said on Tuesday 13 October that he would not take part, and on Wednesday 14 October he confirmed he would attend after Lula said he would be there. Diário do Nordeste reported his reversal, in which he told Lula “I am waiting for you at the Band debate”.
The two candidates also skipped Band’s first-round debate in August, so Sunday will be their first direct exchange of the campaign, according to Correio da Manhã.
Why the Debate Could Move Votes
A runoff has only two candidates, so each answer is a direct comparison. With the race close, a single exchange on the economy, security or the cost of living can shape the last undecided voters’ choice.
Polls measure opinion before the debate, not after it. Our Brazil election polls page lists every survey so you can see how the numbers move once the debate is over.
What It Means for US Readers
If you hold Brazilian stocks, bonds or US-listed shares of Brazilian companies, Sunday evening is a likely moment for price swings in Monday’s trading. The debate starts at 7 p.m. ET, so it ends before the Brazilian markets reopen.
For US readers following trade or politics, the winner sets Brazil’s course with Washington for the next four years. A strong or weak debate performance can change the headlines, but only the 25 October vote decides the result.
What Prediction Markets Say
On Polymarket, an online prediction market, bettors give Flávio Bolsonaro a 76.3% chance of winning the 25 October runoff and Lula 23.5% (16 October, 5:25 p.m. ET). The “Brazil Presidential Election” market has drawn about US$184.8 million in bets.
These are bets, not polls. Kalshi, a market regulated in the US by the CFTC, also lists the runoff, and prices there can move within minutes of the debate.

What Is Not Known
The exact order of the blocks, the time limits and the question rules were still being settled between Band and the campaigns on Friday. It is not known whether the candidates will stick to proposals or turn to attacks.
It is also not known whether the debate will move any voters. The next polls after Sunday will show whether it did.
