• Profitability, bad-loan risks, dividend prospects to trigger selective buying
NIGERIAN banking stocks are heading into the fourth quarter facing a critical earnings test, with pending third-quarter results expected to determine which lenders attract fresh buying interest and which face renewed selling pressure, as investors scrutinise profitability, bad-loan risks, capital strength and dividend prospects.
The sector gained 3.36 percent in September, supported by buying interest in selected banking stocks and insider share purchases. However, the rally was uneven, reflecting mixed earnings performances, company-specific developments and concerns over delays in financial reporting.
Analysts said the performance of individual lenders and the timely release of their third-quarter results would be critical in determining whether the sector can sustain its upward momentum in the coming months.
Among banks that reported their half-year results, Stanbic IBTC Holdings recorded a stronger performance, with profit after tax rising by 38.2 percent year-on-year to ₦239.7 billion. The lender also increased its interim dividend to ₦4.50 per share from ₦2.50, strengthening investor expectations around earnings growth and shareholder returns.
Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO), however, reported a 7.8 percent year-on-year decline in half-year profit after tax to ₦414.2 billion, despite a 65.9 percent reduction in impairment charges.
The contrasting performances underscored the need for investors to look beyond headline earnings and examine the underlying drivers of profitability, including interest income, operating costs, impairment provisions and the quality of loan portfolios.
Market sentiment was also supported by insider purchases in Wema Bank and Sterling Financial Holdings, although trading activity in Sterling was constrained by the suspension of its shares from September 23 following a share reconstruction exercise.
Meanwhile, FCMB Group’s announcement that publication of its third-quarter 2026 results could be delayed until December heightened concerns about earnings visibility and the availability of timely financial information for investment decisions.
The delay could leave investors with less information to assess the group’s financial performance and prospects as the year draws to a close.
First HoldCo led sector gainers in September, appreciating by 10.28 per cent and extending its rally from August. Fidelity Bank followed with an 8.25 per cent gain, while Wema Bank rose by 5.70 percent.
Zenith Bank advanced by 5.18 per cent, while Stanbic IBTC gained 4.42 percent, reflecting continued investor interest in selected lenders.
However, the gains were offset by declines in several banking stocks. Ecobank Transnational Incorporated recorded the steepest loss, falling by 8.11 percent, followed by Access Holdings, which shed 5.00 percent.
United Bank for Africa declined by 4.01 per cent, while FCMB Group, Sterling Financial Holdings and GTCO lost 2.14 per cent, 1.91 per cent and 0.75 per cent, respectively.
The mixed performance suggests that investors are becoming more selective, favouring banks with stronger earnings prospects and clearer visibility on shareholder returns while reassessing those facing reporting delays or company-specific uncertainties.
The banking sector’s performance in October will largely depend on pending third-quarter earnings releases and how the results compare with investors’ expectations.
Investors are expected to focus on asset quality, capital buffers, earnings sustainability and dividend prospects as they position their portfolios for the fourth quarter.
Stronger-than-expected results could reinforce buying interest and extend the sector’s September rally. Conversely, disappointing earnings, rising impairment charges or further reporting delays could weigh on valuations and trigger profit-taking.
The ability of banks to demonstrate sustainable profitability while maintaining adequate capital and managing credit risks will therefore be central to investor sentiment as the sector enters the final quarter of the year.
