LSM was recently in Liepāja for the announcement of the city's programme during its time as a European Capital of Culture for 2027, as you may have already read.
Our guide to some of Liepāja's best-known (and least-known) locations and attractions was local tour guide Armands Akmens, so who better to ask about the effect the Capital of Culture year might have upon the thriving city – Latvia's third-largest – and, more importantly, where to go for a good day out.
You can listen to the full interview with Armands below in which he outlines how he came to be a city guide, what sort of tourists tend to visit Liepāja and what difference the Capital of Culture tag might (or might not) make.
Armands Akmens, Liepāja tour guide
Armands had a busy day explaining Liepāja's very varied history to journalists in Latvian, English and German, having been given that not inconsiderable responsibility by the organizers of the Liepāja 2027 Capital of Culture.
Let's hope the 500 separate events which are planned for the 365 days of 2027 turn out to be just as approachable, friendly and informative as Armands himself.
