KBI Dongyang Steel Pipe, a subsidiary of KBI Group, is supplying critical materials for rocket launch facilities operated by SpaceX, marking a new step in its expansion into the global space industry. The supply deal highlights the potential for South Korean steel pipe manufacturers to enter the aerospace sector, which demands stringent technical and quality standards.
KBI Dongyang Steel Pipe announced on Oct. 19 that it is supplying approximately 950 tons of steel pipes for SpaceX launch facilities in Florida and Texas. All of the pipes were manufactured at the company's plants in Cheonan and Chungju, South Korea. The supply comprises an initial 640-ton shipment in April, followed by second and third batches of 205 tons and 105 tons, respectively, scheduled for delivery in October.
The pipes are used in water deluge systems, which release large volumes of water to mitigate the intense heat and acoustic shock generated during rocket launches. These systems play a critical role in protecting launch pads and surrounding equipment, requiring materials capable of withstanding extreme operating conditions. KBI Dongyang Steel Pipe passed an on-site inspection in March to verify its manufacturing processes, earning recognition for its quality and production capabilities.
The company expects the supply deal to help strengthen its presence in the U.S. space industry beyond a single project. Its track record of supplying materials for SpaceX launch facilities could give it an advantage in competing for additional orders and future projects, although further contracts have not been confirmed.
The announcement also drew a strong response from the stock market. KBI Dongyang Steel Pipe shares surged 29.96% from the previous session to 1,748 won, or approximately $1.31, in morning trading on the Korea Exchange, hitting the daily upper price limit. Shares of other steel pipe manufacturers, including Histeel, Husteel and Nexteel, also advanced.
"We have demonstrated our technological capabilities by supplying products for a project with stringent technical requirements," said Lee Gwak-woo, CEO of KBI Dongyang Steel Pipe. "Building on this achievement, we will actively expand our business in the U.S. market."
Leveraging its manufacturing capabilities developed in the energy and infrastructure sectors, KBI Dongyang Steel Pipe plans to continue expanding into higher-value-added markets such as aerospace. The second and third batches are being supplied according to the planned schedule.
