Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has ordered the deployment of 500 soldiers to Milan to strengthen security after masked demonstrators caused damage across the city over the weekend.
Italian media reported that the deployment would reinforce the government’s “Safe Streets” operation. Authorities discussed the measure during a public order meeting held on Monday afternoon at Palazzo Chigi, the Italian government’s headquarters.
Meanwhile, Italian President Sergio Mattarella expressed solidarity with police officers and Carabinieri who suffered injuries during clashes in Milan on Sunday and Saturday.
“An intelligent and in-depth analysis is needed, alongside careful monitoring capable of addressing violence that appears to erupt unexpectedly and involve unknown actors,” Mattarella said. “This raises questions that require comprehensive investigation.”
US President Donald Trump also commented on the unrest that affected cities in France and Italy over the weekend.
According to Italian media reports, Trump told journalists that “protests in Italy, as in France, are linked to immigration”.
He also said that France and Italy were “worse countries than they were in the past” and repeated his warning that “if Europe does not close its borders, it is finished”.
