We have all watched AI assistants become a permanent fixture on our phones over the last few months, yet finding one that genuinely takes everyday chores off your plate is still surprisingly rare. Most general-purpose AI chatbots are great if you want to brainstorm ideas or summarize an article, but they hit a wall when it comes to practical, real-world tasks like managing your personal finances.
You can describe a theoretical budget to a standard chatbot and get plenty of generic feedback, yet that chatbot cannot keep an eye on your live accounts, start a bill negotiation, or cancel a subscription for you.
That gap between talking and doing is exactly why Rocket Money built Rowan. Designed as an AI-powered personal financial assistant that lives right in your text messages, Rowan proactively watches your money, looks after your budgeting and finances, and does the actual legwork to help save you money so you don’t have to.
When evaluating any new AI tool, the biggest question is what happens behind the scenes after you send a prompt. Most AI assistants can only talk about your money, whereas Rowan is directly connected to your finances and built to take action.
Just as importantly, Rowan isn’t a standalone experiment from a brand-new company trying to figure out personal finance on the fly. Rowan has Rocket Money behind it, meaning it runs on the exact same platform that more than 10 million members already use every day. When you ask Rowan to help lower a bill or drop a recurring service, it taps directly into the established subscription cancelation and bill negotiation operations that Rocket Money has been running for years.
It also brings that capability to you without asking you to build a brand-new habit. Because Rowan lives entirely in your text messages, there is no new app to download and no complicated interface to learn. Rowan doesn’t replace the main Rocket Money mobile app, either; instead, it serves as an additional, conversational way to use Rocket Money straight from the messaging inbox you already check throughout the day.
A proactive partner that reaches out first
Most personal finance tools are passive by design, waiting silently on your phone until you remember to open them up and dig through your recent activity. Rowan flips that dynamic by reaching out to you first whenever something in your accounts needs your attention.
On a regular basis, Rowan texts you a weekly spending summary that provides updates on your recent finances and budgeting, complete with a detailed breakdown of where your money went and a heads-up on any areas of concern. In between those weekly check-ins, Rowan keeps a close watch on your day-to-day activity. It texts you automatically when an account balance is getting low, alerts you the moment a new subscription is detected on your statements, and lets you know when prices are increasing on your existing recurring bills.
Because it lives in your texts, checking in on your money becomes a natural two-way conversation. Whenever a question pops into your head, you can text Rowan to get instant financial updates. You can quickly categorize recent transactions right through text, ask about cancelable subscriptions you might want to clear out, or ask how much money is genuinely safe to spend right now based on your current income and upcoming expenses.
Offload financial chores with a quick text
Getting an alert about a price increase or a forgotten subscription is helpful, but Rowan’s real value shows up when you ask it to take things off your plate. Rowan can start work on your behalf so that the only thing you have to do is send a text.
If you spot a recurring service you no longer want, you can simply text Rowan to cancel that subscription. If a monthly service bill is creeping upward, you can text Rowan to start a bill negotiation on your behalf. Of course, because canceling subscriptions and negotiating bills requires coordinating with providers behind the scenes, these actions don’t happen instantly. Rather, your text kicks off the workflow so Rocket Money can step in and handle the follow-through for you. For everyday organization, you can even text Rowan to set a financial reminder, such as asking it to remind you to pay your credit card on the 15th, keeping your monthly routine on track without cluttering up your calendar.
Pricing and how to get Rowan
Available to users in the United States, the core Rocket Money app is free to download and comes with free basic features, including balance alerts, subscription management, spend tracking, basic budgeting, and bill negotiation. To unlock everything the standard app can do for your finances, you can upgrade to Rocket Money Premium, which uses a “pay what you think is fair” approach currently set between $7 and $14 a month.
Rowan is not part of the free app or the standard Premium tier. To get access to Rowan, you will need to subscribe to Rocket Money Premium+, a separate plan available for a flat $15 per month. Upgrading to Premium+ gives you everything included in Rocket Money Premium, plus full access to Rowan right in your text messages.
