The Nigerian Institute of Architects, NIA, has inducted Jelani Aliyu, a renowned Nigerian automotive designer, as an honorary member in recognition of his contributions to design, innovation and sustainable mobility.
The induction took place during the institute’s 2026 Awards and Fellowship Investiture in Abuja.
The institute said the honour reflected Aliyu’s multidisciplinary career, which spans architecture, automotive design and renewable energy, as well as his contributions to advancing ideas around sustainable urban development.
Mr Aliyu, who gained international recognition for his work on General Motors’ Chevrolet Volt, joins an exclusive group of Nigerians who have received honorary membership of the institute.
Other prominent recipients include former President Goodluck Jonathan and the Emir of Zazzau, Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, according to the information provided on the investiture.
The NIA, which has a 65-year history, reserves its honorary membership for a select group of distinguished individuals outside its conventional professional membership, in recognition of their achievements and contributions to society.
Mr Aliyu’s induction highlights the growing intersection between architecture, technology and sustainable transportation as cities contend with rapid urbanisation, environmental challenges and the need for cleaner energy solutions.
Born in Nigeria, Mr Aliyu studied architecture at the Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, where he graduated as the best all-round student. He subsequently proceeded to the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, United States, to study automotive design.
His career later took him to General Motors, where he became known for his work on the Chevrolet Volt, an extended-range electric vehicle that helped advance the automaker’s electric mobility programme.
The NIA’s recognition also draws attention to Aliyu’s interest in renewable energy and the development of infrastructure to support electric vehicles in Nigeria.
According to the information accompanying the investiture, he has promoted solar-powered electric vehicle charging microgrids and a green-energy vision aimed at supporting more sustainable urban development.
The initiative reflects the potential role of renewable energy and electric mobility in reducing dependence on fossil fuels while supporting cleaner and more efficient transportation systems.
As Nigeria continues to experience urban growth, the integration of sustainable transport, energy infrastructure and urban planning is increasingly important to the development of cities that can accommodate expanding populations while addressing environmental concerns.
Mr Aliyu’s honorary membership is expected to strengthen the relationship between architectural professionals, technology innovators and other stakeholders working towards sustainable development.
The institute’s recognition places him among a select group of national figures whose achievements extend beyond conventional architectural practice, underscoring the relevance of interdisciplinary expertise to Nigeria’s development challenges.
The NIA Awards and Fellowship Investiture is one of the institute’s major events for recognising professional excellence and outstanding contributions to the built environment and society.
Mr Aliyu’s induction adds an international dimension to the institute’s recognition of innovation, particularly in the areas of automotive design, renewable energy and sustainable urban development.
