A Vancouver woman in the Renfrew-Collingwood neighbourhood had to pretend to be asleep when she woke up to a stranger in her bedroom.
According to the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), a woman was asleep in a residence near Atlin Street and East 29th Avenue on Wednesday, Oct. 21, when she woke up around 3:45 a.m. to find an unknown man reportedly going through her personal belongings.
The woman pretended to stay asleep until the stranger had left the room, then she locked the bedroom door and called the police.

“She reported that she lived with roommates and believed the man was still inside the home,” explained the VPD in a release.
“Officers quickly responded to the residence and located the suspect on the second floor.”
When police attempted to speak to the man, he ran into a nearby bedroom inside the residence.
Officers observed the man attempt to jump out of the window, after which he was taken into custody.
“The suspect refused to identify himself,” added VPD. “Officers located identification belonging to a resident of New Mexico and have since been able to confirm his identity.”

This is the second incident in recent months where a Vancouver woman has been surprised by a stranger in her home.
On Aug. 19, a homeowner at Grant Street and Victoria Drive was in her house when she went downstairs, where “she was face-to-face with the suspect.”
Allegedly, the man grabbed several items, then fled.
“Neighbours heard the woman scream and quickly called police, providing officers with a description of the fleeing suspect,” states the press release from the Vancouver Police Department.
Police in the area found a man who matched the description and arrested him with assistance from the Canine Unit. Some of the stolen property was returned to the victim.
The suspect has been charged with one count of break-and-enter.
