We Watched ‘Jujutsu Kaisen In Concert’ At Sunway’s New Performing Arts Centre. Here’s Our Review

Before we get into cursed spirits and the Shibuya Incident, though, the hall deserves a moment of its own.

Located within Sunway Square in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, JCPAC houses the 1,200-seat Grand Theatre, alongside a smaller performance space, The Studio, which accommodates up to 150 people.

The Grand Theatre is a beautiful space, with a sculptural interior that gives it a sense of occasion before the performance even begins. Angular timber surfaces unfold across the walls and ceiling, while illuminated lines accentuate their contours.

There is a story behind those shapes, too. According to JCPAC, the design takes inspiration from the historic tin-mining landscape on which Sunway City was built, translating its terraces and channels into the theatre's architecture. A peacock-tail motif also appears through lines of light that fan across the timber walls.

From our seats, those illuminated lines seemed to draw the eye towards the stage, giving the room an elegant visual rhythm.

Our favourite detail was the blue lighting across the front of the stage when the auditorium darkened. Against the surrounding shadows, it gave the space a luminous, almost ethereal quality. It was a lovely way to appreciate the hall's proportions and quiet grandeur.

The two-tier auditorium has rows of seats that rise progressively towards the back, helping audiences see over the people ahead. For this concert, seating categories included a VIP section, where we sat.

The seats were also comfortable, making it easy to settle in for the evening.

The sound added another dimension. From where we sat, the music felt anchored in front of us while also gently enveloping us, creating an almost 360-degree listening experience.

The theatre combines L-ISA immersive sound with Ambiance active acoustics, allowing its acoustic environment to be adapted for different performances. During this concert, that sense of spaciousness made the music feel especially absorbing.

It is remarkable how much emotion music and familiar images can summon together.

The show focused on the anime's background score, with scenes revisiting its memorable moments and battles, including the Shibuya Incident. The live ensemble combined classical and modern instruments, performing in synchronisation with the footage.

If you were hoping for the anime's opening themes, those were absent from the performance we attended. However, the score offered plenty to recognise, including Delirious, the track familiar to anyone who has encountered those Gojo-inspired food and drink transition videos on TikTok.

Hearing familiar music performed live gave us a different appreciation of how much it contributes to the anime.

Strip away the subtitles and character dialogue, and the emotional weight remains. An expression on screen, a familiar confrontation, and a swelling passage of music were enough to bring back memories and goosebumps.

Vocalist Fara Dolhadi was a particular highlight. Her impassioned delivery gave the characters' struggles an emotional intensity of their own, conveying anguish, resolve, and the determination to keep fighting against overwhelming odds.

With the score brought to the foreground, we found ourselves paying closer attention to feelings we might otherwise absorb without thinking during an ordinary episode. Familiar characters seemed to come alive again through the musicians' performance.

Experiencing that in a comfortable theatre, with a clear view of the stage and enveloping sound, made the evening all the more memorable.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Musical is particularly high on our list.
