Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Two days after a powerful blast ripped through a Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) security headquarters in eastern Baghdad, an investigative report published by Al Mada newspaper and monithas revealed sharp contradictions surrounding the incident, presenting four competing narratives ranging from a targeted foreign strike to sabotage and munitions mismanagement.
The explosion struck at approximately 6:00 PM on Saturday, October 17, 2026, inside a facility operated by the PMF Security Directorate located along Sadr Al-Qanat near the Saad Al-Watri Hospital.
While the PMF’s official communique attributed the incident to an internal fire that detonated obsolete, deteriorated munitions—resulting in minor injuries to five personnel—field sources cited by Al Mada report over twenty injuries among PMF security personnel and unidentified associates. Strict security cordons accompanied the medical evacuation via PMF ambulances, fueling speculation regarding the potential presence of Iranian technical personnel at the site.
The circumstances have ignited debate over the operational nature of the facility. As an intelligence and security installation, the complex is not designated to warehouse expired ordnance. Security sources cited in the report claimed that newly arrived military consignments from Iran had been transferred into the depot just a week prior to the detonation.
Preliminary forensic findings referenced in the investigation point to the possibility of an incoming projectile initiating the primary blast, though information sharing on the file remains tightly restricted by the PMF Chief of Staff’s office while a specialized investigative committee established by Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi conducts its inquiry.
Four Competing Accounts
- A Foreign Drone Strike: A parliamentary figure close to the armed factions rejected the premise of an accidental malfunction, characterizing the blast as a deliberate drone strike aimed at degrading PMF capabilities. The lawmaker dismissed suggestions that the recent integration of faction-affiliated figures into senior executive posts—including cabinet and deputy prime ministerial appointments—immunizes armed groups from covert military strikes. This view aligns with statements from Badr Organization lawmaker Karim Aliwi Al-Muhammadawi, who labeled repeated targetings of PMF assets as crimes violating existing bilateral sovereignty arrangements.
- Supply-Chain Sabotage via Remote Detonation: A field source within an armed faction suggested the deployment of remotely triggered explosive components planted inside munitions crates prior to delivery, drawing comparisons to the cross-border electronic sabotage operations that compromised communication networks in Lebanon two years ago. The source highlighted previous unexplained munitions explosions where remote technical compromise had been suspected.
- Storage Mishap and Industrial Accident: Retired military commander Jabbar Al-Yawar leaned toward the internal explanation, noting the current de-escalation of armed operations against neighboring countries, international transit routes, and regional interests. Al-Yawar stressed that poor storage practices, high ambient conditions, and electrical short-circuits regularly compromise aged ordnance, arguing that technical examinations are necessary before assigning geopolitical intent.
- Broader Preemptive Campaign: Ghazi Faisal, director of the Iraqi Center for Strategic Studies, underscored that ongoing Washington-Tehran friction keeps Iranian-aligned installations within potential targeting crosshairs regardless of diplomatic channels. Drawing on regional intelligence reports regarding potential strike authorizations against over 1,000 regional logistics, weapons manufacturing, and command nodes, Faisal cautioned that the blast could represent either an initial probing action or an uncoordinated internal storage accident.
