Finding the right key for a song is one thing. Knowing what to play next is another. zplane's Tonic 2 builds on its music analysis tools with playable chords, improved MIDI support and a redesigned interface, giving producers a little help when inspiration runs dry.
Have you ever found a great sample, only to spend the next hour figuring out which notes actually work well with it? zplane wants to make that process a little less frustrating with Tonic 2, a major update to its key and scale detection plugin, released on October 21. The original Tonic could already analyze audio and suggest compatible musical keys. Version 2 takes things further, adding new chord tools and expanded MIDI support that help producers turn those suggestions into actual music.
Drop the plugin onto an audio track, press play, and Tonic 2 analyzes the sound in real time, displaying up to three possible keys and their probability scores. A redesigned virtual keyboard then highlights compatible notes and chords, which can be auditioned directly inside the plugin.
The biggest improvement is what happens next. Users can play those chords with a MIDI keyboard, send MIDI to software or hardware instruments, or drag chord progressions into their digital audio workstation (DAW) for further editing. A new Fold Keys mode also maps compatible notes to the white keys, making it harder to hit something painfully out of tune. The interface is now resizable, while the tuning display helps identify recordings that don't quite match standard pitch.
Tonic 2 is available for Windows and macOS in VST3, AU and AAX formats. It normally costs €39, but zplane is offering it for €26.13 until October 30. Existing users can upgrade for €10.
Of course, if you find the right notes, that doesn't automatically make you a great songwriter. But at least Tonic 2 can take some of the guesswork off your shoulders.
