Key Facts
- Mexico’s main stock index slid 1.25% to 69,370 points, giving back the previous session’s push above the 70,000 mark.
- The peso finished at 18.7125 per dollar, a 0.15% dip, as inflation data cut hopes of an early interest rate cut.
- Mid-month inflation accelerated to 3.62%, above the 3.6% forecast, making a near-term interest rate cut from Banxico, the central bank, less likely.
- Grupo México led the turnover board with a 4.3% drop on MXN129 million (about US$6.9 million) traded, the heaviest turnover among Mexico’s blue chips.
- Wall Street’s technology sell-off spilled over with the Nasdaq down 2.60% as investors questioned the durability of AI-driven gains.
- Prediction markets: Polymarket gives 66.5% to no change and 31.2% to a 25-basis-point cut at the November Banxico decision (US$92,094 traded, read 8:30 pm ET, 22 October). Bets, not polls.
Today’s Focus
Mexico’s stock market fell on Thursday after hotter-than-expected inflation data cooled hopes that the central bank will cut interest rates soon. The S&P/BMV IPC, the benchmark index tracking Mexico’s largest listed companies, closed at 69,370 points, down 1.25%.
The peso also slipped, finishing at 18.7125 per US dollar, a 0.15% dip. Mid-month inflation accelerated to 3.62%, above the 3.6% forecast, suggesting Banxico has less room to lower borrowing costs.
A sell-off in US technology stocks added pressure, with the Nasdaq down 2.60% as global investors fretted over stretched AI valuations. That external drag was felt across Latin American equity markets.
What matters today. Inflation came in hot, reducing the odds of near-term rate cuts and punishing Mexican equities while keeping the peso pinned near its yearly low.
01 The session in one read
Mexican stocks dropped on Thursday, with the S&P/BMV IPC, the benchmark index of Mexico’s largest listed companies, closing at 69,370 points, down 1.25%. The fall reversed Wednesday’s rise of 1.43%, which had pushed the index above the 70,000 level.
The trigger was a hotter-than-expected inflation report. Mexico’s mid-month inflation rate accelerated to 3.62% in October, above the 3.6% forecast (RT economic calendar).
That made investors less confident Banxico, the country’s central bank, will cut its benchmark interest rate anytime soon. Higher borrowing costs tend to weigh on company earnings and share prices.
The peso, Mexico’s currency, slipped 0.15% to 18.7125 per US dollar, a small move next to the fall in shares.
Assessment — Inflation Resets the Rate-Cut Timeline HIGH
The evidence points to a clear catalyst: Mexican inflation surprised to the upside, prompting traders to trim bets on Banxico easing. Stocks fell in response, with the IPC down 1.25% and with Grupo México the heaviest-traded loser. The peso moved far less than shares. The variable to watch is the next inflation print: if prices keep rising faster than forecast, Banxico’s room to cut narrows further.
02 The day’s numbers
| Measure | Level | Change | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P/BMV IPC (Mexico’s main stock index) | 69,370 | −1.25% | Gave back Wednesday’s gain |
| USD/MXN (peso per US dollar) | 18.7125 | +0.15% | Dollar firmer, peso softer |
| Key technical level | 70,000 | — | Index closed above it on Wednesday |
The session had no redeeming metric for Mexican bulls. The index fell back below 70,000, a level it had reached only the previous day when a rally in América Móvil and airport operators had lifted the market.
The index closed on Wednesday at 70,249.54, so Thursday’s close is a loss of about 880 points in one session.

The session read
The S&P/BMV IPC eased 1.25%, with breadth positive — 10 of 15 names higher. Financials led, while Telecom lagged.
03 Why it moved — Inflation surprise
The National Statistics Institute reported mid-month inflation of 3.62% in October, above the 3.6% forecast. Core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, came in at 3.78%, above the 3.7% expected.
The first-half-of-October reading reinforced that message. Prices rose 0.41% over the two weeks, versus a 0.37% forecast, while core prices gained 0.25%, above the 0.18% anticipated (RT economic calendar).
For Banxico, this reduces the room to loosen monetary policy. Rate cuts typically boost stock markets by lowering financing costs for companies and making equities more attractive relative to bonds.
On top of that, a separate report showed Mexico’s unemployment rate for September fell to 2.8%, below the 3% forecast (RT economic calendar) and the 3% of a year earlier, according to INEGI. A tight labour market generally supports more consumer spending, but it also signals that inflation pressure could linger.
04 The day’s movers
| Driver | Level / Move | Change | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grupo México (mining and transport) | MXN129m turnover | −4.3% | Heaviest traded name; fell sharply |
| Banorte (banking group) | MXN76m turnover | +0.6% | Held up despite the index drop |
| América Móvil (telecoms) | MXN46m turnover | +3.0% | Second day of strong gains |
| Femsa (beverages and retail) | MXN33m turnover | +0.6% | Modest gain, defensive tone |
| Walmex (Mexican arm of Walmart) | MXN29m turnover | +2.0% | Outperformed as consumer staples drew buyers |
| GAP (airport operator) | MXN25m turnover | −0.6% | Small pullback after recent jump |
| Arca Continental (bottler) | MXN25m turnover | +2.8% | Among gainers |
Grupo México, the mining and rail conglomerate, led turnover with MXN129 million (about US$6.9 million, at 18.7125 per dollar) changing hands but fell 4.3%. Copper slid on Thursday, and Southern Copper, its US-listed sister company, lost 7.3% in New York.
On the winning side, América Móvil, the telecoms giant controlled by the Slim family, rose 3.0%. That echoed the prior session, when strong quarterly results from the company had helped push the index above 70,000, though the advance was not enough to overcome the broader market decline.
The session’s biggest gainers also included Cuervo, the tequila producer, up 5.2%, and Arca Continental, up 2.8%. The biggest losers beyond Grupo México were FIBRAPL14, a real-estate investment trust, down 5.8%, and Peñoles, another mining firm, down 3.1%.
05 The regional scoreboard
| Index | Country | Change |
|---|---|---|
| S&P/BMV IPC | Mexico | −1.25% |
| Ibovespa | Brazil | −1.15% |
| IPSA | Chile | −1.88% |
| COLCAP | Colombia | −1.25% |
| Merval | Argentina | −1.5% |
Losses were spread across Latin America, with every major regional index falling. Chile’s IPSA was the worst performer, down 1.88%, while Argentina’s MSCI Merval fell 1.5% to 97,993.
The regional weakness tracked Wall Street, where the tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped 2.60% as investors questioned the sustainability of AI-driven valuations. The S&P 500 fell 1.21%, while the Dow Jones was flat.
06 The technical picture
The benchmark index closed at 69,370, below the 70,000 level it had crossed on Wednesday. On Tuesday it had closed at 69,258.58, the first level to watch on the downside.
The peso moved from 18.6844 to 18.7125 per dollar. The two moves together show investors reacting to the inflation figures, not leaving Mexico.
What Prediction Markets Say
Polymarket, a prediction market, gave 66.5% to no change in the Bank of Mexico’s policy rate at its November decision and 31.2% to a cut of 25 basis points, with US$92,094 traded (read at 8:30 pm ET on 22 October).
These prices are bets, not polls. They can move quickly with each new inflation reading.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
07 What to watch
- Banxico policy expectations: How much further the market trims the odds of a rate cut after the inflation beat
- US tech volatility: The Nasdaq’s 2.60% drop suggests AI sentiment may be turning, a key external risk
- Peso near 18.71: A move well above this level would show investors pricing fewer rate cuts.
- US data and Wall Street: US initial jobless claims fell to 194,000 against a forecast of 200,000, and the Nasdaq lost about 2.6%; both shape the dollar and Mexican exports.
