BRAC Bank is set to issue a Tk1,000 crore green bond, becoming the first bank in Bangladesh to do so, according to the bank.
Tareq Refat Ullah Khan, managing director and chief executive officer of BRAC Bank, will announce the launch of the initiative at a press conference tomorrow afternoon (25 October) at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka, according to a press invitation.
According to the bank, the bond will follow Bangladesh Bank's green bond guidelines. It will finance renewable energy projects, environmentally friendly buildings and energy-efficiency improvements in the industrial sector.
Green bonds are financial instruments used to raise funds for environmentally sustainable projects, while offering investors regular income payments.
A disclosure published on 23 May said BRAC Bank PLC plans to issue its green bond worth up to Tk1,000 crore at face value to support its green financing activities.
The bank's board of directors approved the issuance at a meeting held two days earlier.
According to the disclosure, the bond will be non-convertible and fully redeemable, with a three-year tenure.
BRAC Bank offers specialised financing for green projects. These include renewable energy initiatives such as solar and wind power, energy-efficient technologies, eco-friendly construction and responsible waste management through effluent treatment plant (ETP) facilities, according to its website.
In October 2025, the bank secured regulatory approval to raise Tk1,000 crore through a social bond, the first of its kind in Bangladesh. The proceeds were intended to strengthen the bank's Tier-II capital under Basel III and support social development.
