DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA’S golfing landscape is entering an exciting new chapter. The opening of the Serengeti Golf Course signals more than the expansion of sports infrastructure; it presents an opportunity to grow the game, create jobs, attract investment and introduce more young people to a sport with global appeal.
Serengeti is not Tanzania’s first golf course, nor will it be the last. Established clubs such as Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Golf Club, TPDF Lugalo Golf Club, Arusha Gymkhana Golf Club, Moshi Golf Club, Morogoro Gymkhana Club and Mufindi Golf Club have helped sustain the game over the years.
Meanwhile, the international-standard TPDF golf project at Ihumwa in Dodoma represents another major investment in the country’s golfing future.
These developments are encouraging. But infrastructure alone cannot make golf thrive.
A golf course without golfers is an opportunity waiting to be realised. The time has come to make golf more accessible to Tanzanian youth.
Schools, universities, golf clubs, local authorities and sports organisations should work together to introduce beginners to the game through junior programmes, affordable coaching, equipment-sharing initiatives and community tournaments. Talent should not be overlooked simply because a young person cannot afford to play.
Golf also offers benefits beyond sport. It creates employment in course maintenance, hospitality, coaching, tourism, event management and administration.
It provides a valuable networking environment where professionals, entrepreneurs, investors and young people can build relationships, exchange ideas and discover opportunities. With the right support, golf can strengthen domestic tourism and attract international visitors.

Countries renowned for golf have built strong golfing cultures through investment, participation, talent development and competitive pathways.
Tanzania can learn from these examples and develop its own generation of skilled golfers capable of competing regionally and internationally.
The priority must now shift from building courses alone to building a golfing community. Grassroots development, inclusive access and sustained investment in young talent should accompany every new facility. Let us celebrate the courses, but let us also fill them.
Let us see more young Tanzanians learning the game, more local golfers competing and more communities benefiting from its economic potential.
The real measure of Tanzania’s golfing progress will not be how many courses we build, but how many golfers we inspire to step onto the fairway and putt on the green.
