An OpenAI engineer has been charged with planting a hidden audio recording device inside the company’s San Francisco office. Federal prosecutors say he had also booked a one-way ticket to Saudi Arabia.
The accused, 35-year-old Abdulrahman Alfozan, was arrested on October 9, 2026. His flight was scheduled for October 12, which left investigators a three-day window to spare.
A bug in the toilet paper
The device itself was roughly the size of a thumb, equipped with a microphone and advanced encryption.
Investigators say it was tucked inside toilet paper and plugged into a television’s USB port.
The device was allegedly installed on or about September 28, 2026. OpenAI found it on September 30 during what the company described as a routine security sweep.
Once the device turned up, OpenAI launched an internal investigation. The company reportedly used its own AI models to help trace the device back to Alfozan.
What prosecutors say they have
Alfozan joined OpenAI as an engineer in July 2025. That means he had been at the company a little over a year when the device was discovered.
According to the evidence cited by federal prosecutors, CCTV footage showed Alfozan near the room where the device was hidden on multiple occasions before its discovery. He was reportedly not authorized to access that area.
Then there is the travel booking. Prosecutors allege Alfozan reserved a one-way flight to Saudi Arabia for October 12.
OpenAI has fired Alfozan. The company says no sensitive data or proprietary information was accessed or exfiltrated.
It is worth stressing that these are charges, not a conviction. Alfozan has not been found guilty of anything, and the allegations will need to be proven in court.
Why Washington is paying attention
This is not being treated as a garden-variety workplace misconduct case. Authorities have framed it as a national security matter.
FBI Director Kash Patel is among the officials who have characterized the incident that way. Authorities have emphasized the need to protect US technological leadership in AI from foreign threats.
The FBI’s investigation is ongoing. Officials have also pointed to a broader need for stronger protective measures at leading AI organizations.
What this means going forward
Prosecutors have not, based on the available record, publicly laid out what Alfozan allegedly intended to do with any recordings or whether anyone else was involved.
Those answers, if they come, will likely emerge through court filings and the continuing FBI investigation. Until then, the facts on the table are a thumb-sized device, a roll of toilet paper, a TV’s USB port, and a one-way ticket that never got used.
