Tintin fans have been in the wilderness for quite some time. After the Steven Spielberg-directed The Adventures of Tintin hit theaters in 2011, Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson confirmed that a sequel was on the way. This follow-up was originally promised for sometime in 2014 or 2015, with Jackson directing. Needless to say, that didn’t happen.
Thankfully, Jackson finally gave another update on this long-awaited Tintin sequel. At the Sitges Film Festival (which is dedicated to fantasy, horror, and cult films) in Spain, he reiterated that the movie is still in the works. “We’ve also already written the script for Tintin 2, the second Tintin film. That will be the next film I make,” he said. This backs up what Jackson said in May, when he broke years of silence to confirm a version of the script was done and that he’d be directing the movie.
For those unaware, The Adventures of Tintin is a long-running comic series written and illustrated by Belgian cartoonist Hergé. It originally ran from 1929 to 1976 in France, and followed Tintin, a Belgian reporter accompanied by his dog Snowy. In the 2011 adaptation, Tintin embarks on an adventure to find the treasure of a legendary naval warship, the Unicorn.
Peter Jackson provides updates on The Lord of the Rings projects
Beyond Tintin, Jackson gave some updates on the future of The Lord of the Rings movies. He confirmed that The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is almost finished filming, with about two weeks of shooting left. He also reiterated that The Shadow of the Past is still alive and in the scriptwriting stage.
The Hunt for Gollum is the next Lord of the Rings film. It follows Aragorn’s quest to find Gollum on behalf of Gandalf before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. The movie is being directed by Andy Serkis, who is also returning to play the titular character. It’s set for a Dec. 17, 2027 release.
As for The Shadow of the Past, it will take place 14 years after Frodo leaves Middle-earth to journey to Valinor, as Sam, Merry, and Pippin retrace the first steps of their legendary adventure. Stephen Colbert and Philippa Boyens are developing the script. It was previously reported that the film was in danger after the merger between Paramount and Warner Bros., but Jackson has debunked that rumor.
