Cairo – Parliamentary sources revealed on Sunday that the Egyptian House of Representatives adjourned its emergency closed-door session, convened at the invitation of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, until Monday to continue discussing ways to support Saudi Arabia in the face of the recent attacks it has been subjected to.
The sources explained that the decision to adjourn the session was made to allow more members of parliament to express their opinions and to continue discussions regarding the Egyptian position on regional developments and the escalation targeting the Kingdom.
The sources did not disclose whether any decisions were issued during Sunday's session, or the nature of the measures that the council might discuss in its next session.
National Defense Council Decisions
The parliamentary session followed a meeting of the Egyptian National Defense Council, chaired by Sisi on Sunday at the Presidential Palace, to discuss regional developments, particularly the attacks targeting Saudi Arabia.
The council announced Egypt's full solidarity with the Kingdom, emphasizing the link between Saudi national security and Egyptian and Arab national security.
The council decided to provide all necessary and possible forms of support to Saudi Arabia, with the aim of defending its security and stability, protecting its territory and resources, and safeguarding Islamic holy sites.
He also stressed the continuation and intensification of Egyptian political and diplomatic efforts, in coordination with relevant regional and international parties, to de-escalate tensions and resolve crises in the region through peaceful means.
The National Defense Council meeting was attended by senior political, military, and security officials, including the Speakers of the House of Representatives and the Cabinet, the Minister of Defense, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, and the Director of General Intelligence.
The Constitutional Framework
Article 152 of the Egyptian Constitution stipulates that the President of the Republic is the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and may not declare war or send the Armed Forces on a combat mission outside the country's borders without first consulting the National Defense Council and obtaining the approval of the House of Representatives by a two-thirds majority.
In the absence of the House of Representatives, the Constitution requires consulting the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces and obtaining the approval of the Cabinet and the National Defense Council.
