[Key Issue Briefing]
■ Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) and SK hynix (000660.KS) lag the global chip rally: Micron climbed 11.90% and TSMC's American depositary receipts rose 12.55% since the end of August, while Samsung Electronics gained just 0.77% and SK hynix 0.43%. Combined net selling of 22.13 trillion won by foreign investors, along with short-term arbitrage trading using leveraged exchange-traded funds, has locked the country's large-cap chipmakers into a trading range.
■ Humanoid robots emerge as a future growth driver for Samsung and SK hynix: Counterpoint Research projects that DRAM demand for humanoid robots will surge roughly 20-fold by 2030, to 172,000 terabits from about 8,300 terabits this year. Samsung Electronics has said it is preparing next-generation robot chip solutions, while SK hynix has announced plans to jointly develop next-generation memory with Nvidia for the Jetson Thor robot chip.
■ Nvidia accelerates its push to dominate the open AI ecosystem: Reports of talks to acquire Reflection AI, valued at $25 billion (about 33 trillion won), have drawn market attention to Nvidia's strategy of expanding open-weight AI. Following its $12.9 billion purchase of Hugging Face earlier this month, another deal would further highlight the potential for a broad realignment of the open AI ecosystem.
[News of Interest to Stock Investors]
1. Micron Jumps 12% While Samsung and SK hynix Gain Less Than 1%, Sidelined in Chip Rebound
Key points: From Aug. 31 to Oct. 8, Micron rose 11.90% and TSMC's ADRs gained 12.55%, while Samsung Electronics advanced 0.77% and SK hynix 0.43%. Foreign investors sold a net 15.9992 trillion won of SK hynix and 6.1285 trillion won of Samsung Electronics, for combined net selling of 22.1277 trillion won, with about 72% of that concentrated in SK hynix. Foreign ownership of Samsung Electronics fell to 46.38% as of the 8th, the lowest in about 18 years and nine months, or since January 2008. Cumulative gains since the start of the year reached 103.89% for Samsung Electronics and 148.31% for SK hynix, intensifying pressure from profit-taking. Samsung Electronics posted preliminary third-quarter operating profit of 107.4 trillion won, indicating solid results, but recurring talk that the memory cycle may have passed its peak is weighing on investor sentiment.
Key points: Counterpoint Research expects DRAM demand for humanoid robots to grow about 20-fold, to 172,000 terabits in 2030 from roughly 8,300 terabits this year. DRAM capacity per robot is projected to more than double, to 39 gigabytes in 2030 from 19 gigabytes this year, while global shipments are forecast to swell to 500,000 units in 2030 from 60,000 this year. Samsung Electronics said it is preparing "next-generation robot chip solutions spanning high-bandwidth, low-power memory, image sensors and foundry capabilities," while SK hynix will jointly develop next-generation memory with Nvidia for Jetson Thor. With a new market opening that will drive demand for both LPDDR low-power DRAM and high-capacity NAND flash, long-term growth visibility for the two companies has improved.
3. Nvidia Moves to Expand Open AI, Reportedly Pursuing Reflection AI Acquisition
Key points: The Financial Times reported that Nvidia is in talks to acquire or make an additional investment in Reflection AI, founded in 2024 by former researchers at Google DeepMind. Reflection AI was valued at $25 billion (about 33 trillion won) in a funding round in March, and Nvidia is already a major shareholder after investing $800 million. Nvidia indirectly acquired AI chip designer Groq for $20 billion last year and bought open AI platform Hugging Face for $12.9 billion earlier this month, stepping up its expansion of the open AI ecosystem. A string of deals that shake the closed-model landscape led by Anthropic, OpenAI and Google would raise the prospect of a structural realignment in AI infrastructure demand.

Key points: SeAH Superalloy Technologies, a second-tier subsidiary of SeAH Besteel Holdings (001430.KS), will begin full operations in the first half of next year at a plant in Temple, Texas, built with an investment of $110 million (about 150 billion won). The plant will produce superalloy ingots and metal powders, core materials for space and aircraft engines, and will target entry into the supply chain from a base in Texas, where SpaceX, Lockheed Martin and Boeing are clustered. Supply shortages are severe, with lead times at global superalloy producers running 50 to 100 weeks, and the company also expects a geopolitical premium as a firm from an allied nation. SeAH Changwon Integrated Special Steel has previously supplied special alloys to SpaceX, drawing close industry attention to the possibility of joining the Starship supply chain.
5. Big Tech With Strong Cash Generation in Focus as 'Cash Cow ETFs' Gain Traction in U.S.
Key points: As Big Tech's AI investment burden grows, cash cow ETF strategies that screen stocks by free cash flow have grown to tens of trillions of won in the U.S. market. COWZ, a flagship product, has net assets of about $19 billion (about 25 trillion won), while VFLO has topped $11 billion. The trend follows a surge in data center spending by Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Alphabet and Oracle to $1.17 trillion this year from $349 billion in 2023, prompting downward revisions to expected free cash flow at major companies. With the concentration in AI-related stocks increasing the S&P 500's sensitivity to the AI investment cycle, strategies that screen stocks by cash generation have emerged as an alternative for reducing index investment risk.
6. Flood of Bankruptcy Filings Bruises KOSDAQ
Key points: Of 131 disclosures of bankruptcy petitions filed against KOSDAQ-listed companies from January 2016 through August this year, courts granted only four and dismissed 119. Despite the extremely low acceptance rate, trading in the stock can be suspended once a bankruptcy petition is disclosed, highlighting a structural problem that restricts trading opportunities for ordinary shareholders. Optron-Tec plunged to a 52-week low on the trading day after its bankruptcy petition disclosure, while M Gen Solution saw trading halted for three sessions on nothing more than rumors of a petition, with disclosure of the dismissal and withdrawal coming the same day. Amid growing concern that the bankruptcy petition system can be used as a tool to pressure companies, discussions on reforming it are gaining momentum, led by the National Assembly's National Policy Committee.
