Rerapara, Oct 20: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday inaugurated the new building of the Rerapara Community and Rural Development Block in South West Garo Hills. He also laid the foundation stone for the AMPT Road project from Garobadha to Tura and inaugurated a suspension bridge at Samandalgre.
The programme was attended by MLAs Subir Marak, Sanjay Sangma and Mehtab Chandee A. Sangma, along with Nokmas, district and block officials, and local residents.
The Chief Minister felicitated the Aking Nokma of Rerapara for donating land for the new block office. He thanked her and the local community for their contribution.
Addressing the gathering, Sangma described block development offices as crucial to public service delivery, noting that most government schemes and services are implemented at the block level.
“Secretariat may be the highest ranking office, but work-wise, the most important is the Block Development Office. Maximum schemes and public services are implemented through the block. If the BDO and staff work efficiently, 75 percent of public concerns will be resolved,” he said.
Recalling the condition of government offices, Sangma said nearly 70% of block offices in Meghalaya had been functioning from small rented premises with inadequate space for staff.
He said the government had sanctioned close to ₹200 crore to streamline administration and upgrade block offices across the state.
He also highlighted infrastructure improvements in other sectors, including the construction and renovation of over 2,000 government school buildings, the renovation of police stations and the development of college infrastructure at Baghmara, Williamnagar and Nongstoin.
Calling himself the “Captain of Team Meghalaya”, Sangma urged government employees to serve people with compassion, honesty and commitment.

“Keep people first in your approach,” he said.
The Chief Minister also said the concerns of Rerapara had been mapped under Priority 1 and Priority 2 categories, and interventions had been initiated accordingly.
The AMPT Road project, connecting Garobadha and Tura, is expected to strengthen connectivity in Garo Hills. The suspension bridge at Samandalgre is part of a special state government initiative to construct more than 100 suspension bridges to connect remote habitations across Meghalaya
