Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has described Trabzonspor’s 2-0 victory over Beşiktaş as a difficult encounter, praising his side’s defensive organisation after they secured another important win in the Turkish Super Lig, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Trabzonspor recorded their fourth consecutive victory under head coach Thomas Reis on Monday, with Ozan Tufan opening the scoring in the 21st minute before Mohamed Salah sealed the win with a second goal in the 71st minute at Papara Park.
Nwaiwu started the encounter and helped Trabzonspor keep a clean sheet against a Beşiktaş side that created several opportunities but failed to find the net.
Reflecting on the match after the final whistle, the Nigerian centre-back acknowledged the quality of their opponents while expressing satisfaction with his team’s ability to take their chances and secure all three points.
“First of all, we can say that it was a very difficult match for us. We played against a very good team. We scored two goals and then won; we are leaving with three points,” he said, as quoted by A Spor.
The defender also attributed Trabzonspor’s defensive solidity to the team’s tactical preparation and collective effort, while acknowledging the contribution of goalkeeper Andre Onana.
“One of the reasons we conceded so few goals is that we have been working on formations as a team. Our goalkeeper is also helping us a lot in this regard,” he added.
The victory lifted Trabzonspor to 16 points after eight matches, placing them fourth in the standings, while Beşiktaş remained fifth with 15 points.
With Trabzonspor maintaining their winning momentum, Nwaiwu acknowledged that the team would need to sustain its hard work and consistency to challenge for the league title.
“We will go through very big stages to become champions. We know that becoming champions comes through very hard work,” he concluded.
