On Sunday morning, under heavy gunfire, dozens of Palestinian families in Gaza City's Shuja'iyya neighbourhood were forced to flee as Israeli forces moved yellow concrete blocks towards their tents without warning.
Mahmoud Obeid, a 42-year-old father of four, told The New Arab that he woke up that morning and saw Israel's yellow-painted cement blocks that designated where the so-called "Yellow Line" was had advanced to within a short distance of his family's tent.
"We woke up to find the yellow blocks right next to our tents in the Shuja'iyya neighbourhood," he described.
Forced to flee, Obeid spent the night with a family with whom he had no previous ties. His wife and children remained in their tent, waiting for him to find alternative shelter before they head out as well.
"I don't know where to take my family," he added. "Once again, I am heading into the unknown. There is nowhere left to pitch my tent, and the western areas of Gaza City are overcrowded with displaced people."
The advance of the so-called "Yellow Line" is further shrinking the already limited space available to Gaza's displaced population.
Um Mohammed Owaida, a resident of Shuja'iyya, told TNA that she no longer knew how to protect her children from repeated displacement after being forced to gather the family's belongings in haste.
"Just when we think we've found a place to stay, something happens that forces us to leave again. We have no home to return to and nowhere else to go. Our only thoughts are how to protect our children and where we can find space to pitch our tent," she described.
She fears that Israel will push forward concrete blocks even further, leaving her family with fewer options.
"The western areas are packed with displaced people. Even if we found a small spot, we wouldn't know how long we could stay before being forced to leave once more," she added.
Official Palestinian estimates indicate that Israel controls approximately 70 per cent of the Gaza Strip, which covers around 365 square kilometres, forcibly concentrating more than two million Palestinians to an ever-shrinking area, much of it already overwhelmed by destruction.
Some residents in Gaza describe this process as akin to pressing a syringe, with them inside it: as pressure increases at one end, its contents are forced towards the other.
As the space available in eastern Gaza narrows, more families are pushed westward, where tents stand crowded together and opportunities to find shelter continue to diminish. The question is no longer simply where many will go to, but whether anywhere remains to stay.
Repeated displacement is particularly difficult for elderly people, the sick and children, who struggle to endure the physical and psychological toll of moving from one place to another.
Um Abed al-Batniji, an elderly Palestinian woman, told TNA that she was exhausted by the prospect of having to leave her current shelter yet again.
"We no longer have the strength to leave every time," she remarked. "We are elderly; we cannot walk long distances or carry our belongings. All we want is a place to lay our heads and feel somewhat safe, yet we do not know if we will remain there until the next morning."
"We have come to fear sleep, not knowing what might happen when we wake up. We dread finding ourselves forced to gather what little we own and flee again, with no idea where we might go next," she added.
"The advance of the line and the movement of yellow concrete blocks into new areas are raising concerns about the shrinking space available to Palestinians and the displacement of more families towards overcrowded western areas," Gaza-based political analyst Ahed Ferwana said to TNA.
The analyst stressed that these developments suggests Israel seeks to impose "a new reality on the ground", further restricting Palestinian movement and determining where Palestinians can live, in addition to Israel's continued violations of the ceasefire agreement, as part of its overall policy of genocide.
According to Gaza's Government Media Office, 5,474 Israeli violations had been recorded since the agreement took effect last year, and Israel has killed at least 1,488 Palestinians and wounded another 5,280 during this period.
