GAUTENG — The family of Eulenda Mokwevho, a 36-year-old woman from Alexandra, Johannesburg, is appealing to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) to assist in repatriating her remains after she died in South Korea, where she had been working.
Known affectionately as Popola, Eulenda was a single mother who left South Africa on 8 April 2025 after a friend already based in South Korea informed her of a job opportunity there. As the eldest child and primary provider for her four children, including one currently in matric, she decided to go, leaving them in the care of her sister and mother.
Family receives shocking news
Her family described her as someone who regularly sent money home and, on occasions when she could not, ensured her children were still provided for. In the final phone call her family received from her, she reportedly sounded well and in good health.
The news of her death reached the family on 9 October, when her mother received a call informing her that Eulenda had passed away. No further details about the cause of death have been confirmed.
In a video shared on X by journalist Everson Luhanga, grieving family members made a heartfelt plea to authorities and the public for help in bringing Eulenda home.
Family cannot afford repatriation
The Mokwevho family called on DIRCO and any members of the public who are able to assist to help ensure she receives a dignified burial at home. DIRCO had not publicly responded to the family's appeal at the time of publication.
