Western Union’s stablecoin has landed in one of the most important remittance markets on the planet. Bitso, a regulated digital asset platform in Mexico, announced on October 13, 2026 that it has integrated USDPT, the dollar-pegged token tied to Western Union’s Digital Asset Network.
What Bitso is actually offering
The integration works on two levels. Eligible retail users in Mexico can buy and sell USDPT directly with Mexican pesos (MXN) inside the Bitso app.
That removes a step. Users do not need to buy another crypto asset first and then swap it, because the peso-to-USDPT route is direct.
The second piece is aimed at commercial players. Businesses and Western Union agents can tap conversion and liquidity services through Bitso Business, the company’s institutional arm.
USDPT itself is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, N.A. and runs on the Solana blockchain. It is designed to be redeemable 1:1 for US dollar reserves.
There is an important caveat. USDPT is not insured by the FDIC and carries no government backing, so the 1:1 design depends on the issuer and its reserves, not on a federal guarantee.
A small token entering a big corridor
The numbers on both sides of this deal are wildly different in scale. USDPT’s market cap sits at approximately $5.9M to $17M, with a circulating supply of around 5.9M to 17M tokens as of mid-October 2026.
Bitso’s remittance footprint is far larger. The platform processed approximately $6.5B in remittances to Mexico in 2024, which represented over 10% of the US-Mexico remittance corridor.
The timeline has been brisk. USDPT launched on May 4, 2026, and integrated with the exchange Bybit on June 4, 2026.
Mexico now joins a list of markets for Western Union’s Digital Asset Network that includes the Philippines and Bolivia.
Why Western Union wants a stablecoin in the first place
A stablecoin offers a different plumbing system. Value moves on a blockchain, in this case Solana, and can be converted back into local money at the other end through a partner like Bitso.
Choosing Anchorage Digital Bank as issuer signals a preference for regulated infrastructure. Anchorage operates as a federally chartered bank, which gives the product a compliance story Western Union can point to with regulators and partners.
What this means for remittances and the stablecoin market
For Mexican users, the practical change is choice. Someone receiving dollars from relatives in the US could, in principle, hold value in a dollar-pegged token instead of converting straight into pesos. That also carries the risks noted above, including the lack of deposit insurance, which users should understand before treating a stablecoin like a bank account.
Still, the gap between USDPT’s supply and the size of the corridor is the number to watch. A market cap of approximately $5.9M to $17M is modest next to the $6.5B Bitso processed in 2024, and growth in circulating supply over the coming months would show whether the integration is moving real money or just generating headlines.
