Even as the echoes of Durga Puja's grandeur continue to linger across Tripura, the festive landscape is already undergoing a graceful transformation. With the emotional farewell to Goddess Durga now giving way to fresh anticipation, households across the state have begun preparations for Kojagari Lakshmi Puja, one of the most cherished festivals in the Bengali calendar, dedicated to the Goddess of wealth, prosperity and abundance.
From Agartala to Boxanagar and other parts of the state, markets have started adorning themselves with beautifully crafted idols of Goddess Lakshmi. Clay artisans have brought an array of exquisitely designed idols to local marketplaces, hoping to meet the seasonal demand from thousands of devotees preparing to welcome the deity into their homes.
This year's Kojagari Lakshmi Puja will be observed on the auspicious Purnima tithi, commencing on October 25, and preparations are already gaining momentum. In homes large and small, families are making arrangements for the sacred occasion, decorating prayer spaces and collecting puja essentials. On the night of Kojagari Purnima, devotees will invoke Goddess Lakshmi with prayers seeking prosperity, wellbeing and happiness for their households.
The festival, deeply woven into Bengal's cultural and spiritual fabric, is renowned for its serene yet joyous atmosphere. As conch shells resonate through neighbourhoods and the sounds of ululation and temple bells fill the evening air, devotees will welcome the Goddess with lit lamps, incense, elaborate offerings and traditional rituals. Courtyards and entrances will be adorned with colourful alpana designs, while homes will glow with devotion and festivity.
Across Tripura, Lakshmi Puja is expected to be celebrated with customary fervour in residential neighbourhoods, temples and community spaces. Families are preparing special offerings, arranging devotional gatherings and decorating their homes in anticipation of the auspicious night believed to invite divine blessings and prosperity.
Artisans in Agartala said they have produced a larger number of idols this year compared to previous seasons, offering a variety of designs and sizes to suit different preferences and budgets. However, despite adequate supplies in the markets, they noted that customer footfall has remained relatively limited so far. With only a short time left before the festival, many idol makers are still waiting for business to pick up.
Adding to their concerns is the increase in production costs, which has led to a rise in idol prices this year. Nevertheless, artisans remain optimistic that buyers will flock to the markets during the final days leading up to the puja, as is traditionally the case.
Meanwhile, rising prices of daily essentials continue to put pressure on household budgets. Yet, for many families, Lakshmi Puja remains an inseparable part of tradition and faith. Despite financial constraints, devotees are determined to celebrate the occasion according to their means, purchasing idols and puja materials so that the Goddess of fortune may be welcomed into their homes with due reverence.
As Tripura transitions from the splendour of Durga Puja to the serene devotion of Lakshmi Puja, a new wave of festive enthusiasm is sweeping through towns and villages alike. Markets are gradually coming alive, artisans are hopeful of brisk sales, and households are preparing for a night illuminated by faith, prayer and the timeless aspiration for peace, prosperity and abundance.
