You Can See Everything, Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s quasi-documentary about Theranos founder and convicted fraudster Elizabeth Holmes, has become one of the buzziest movies of the year. The film follows Fielder’s intimate interviews with Holmes and her partner Billy Evans, with whom he resided shortly before she began her prison sentence in 2023.

Beyond big box-office numbers, You Can See Everything has become a critical darling and a surprise awards contender. “The film’s title comes from a promise that Holmes makes to Fielder about this endeavor; she’s so serious about total transparency that she texts him the same phrase minutes later. You Can See Everything makes good on the irony behind that pledge,” wrote Rolling Stone’s David Fear. “As for viewers, you will likely have no idea what you have just seen, besides that it’s simply, unabashedly, unashamedly brilliant.”

While You Can See Everything starts with a last-week-on-the-Elizabeth-Holmes-show recap of how we got here, it’s fairly top-level; the documentary veers away from the nitty-gritty of Theranos’ complex financial crimes into much stranger territory. Fielder and Oppenheim are likely betting that viewers have absorbed at least some of the headlines around one of the most notorious financial crimes of the 21st century, and instead choose to explore the relationship between Holmes and Evans and ask some existential questions about the very nature of truth itself. But if you’re not familiar with the founder of the ill-fated blood testing company, there’s plenty to read and watch to get caught up.

If you walked out of You Can See Everything wanting to see even more, or you haven’t seen the movie yet because of the notoriously hard-to-get tickets and want to come prepared, here’s a guide to everything you should read and watch.

‘Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup’

For anyone looking to take a deep dive on Theranos, John Carreyrou’s 2018 book Bad Blood is essential reading. Carreyrou’s investigations in The Wall Street Journal were part of what led to the downfall of Theranos, and Bad Blood sums up the story from founding to failure. Fortunately, it reads more like a crime novel than a dense legal document. Carreyrou also hosted a follow-up podcast titled Bad Blood: The Final Chapter that picks up with the start of Holmes’ criminal trial. The podcast is available on any podcast app.

‘The Dropout’

The Dropout tracks the rise and fall of Theranos through a fictionalized account, chronicling Holmes’ founding of the company and her romantic relationship with Theranos president Sunny Balwani. The Dropout plays an important role in You Can See Everything, with Amanda Seyfried’s portrayal of Holmes referenced throughout. The series was based on an ABC-produced podcast of the same name hosted by Rebecca Jarvis, which is available on any podcast platform.

‘The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley’

You Can See Everything isn’t the only documentary about a Silicon Valley titan out this year. Alex Gibney’s Musk, about Elon Musk, was released in October to generally positive reviews (except from Musk himself, who called it a “psy op”). Before Musk, Gibney trained his skilled documentarian eye on Theranos with 2019’s The Inventor, a more straightforward documentary that tells the story of Theranos and Holmes. Following The Inventor with You Can See Everything would make for an intense, but compelling double feature.

‘Nathan For You’

Instead of featuring a behind-the-camera director, You Can See Everything makes Nathan Fielder as much a character in the film as Holmes. Fielder references Nathan For You during the film, with the comedian asking Holmes’ partner, Billy Evans, why he would want the host of a show about business scams to interview him. The series put Fielder’s brand of comedy and documentary on the map; in the show, he plays a fictionalized version of himself, where he offers small businesses some outlandish ideas for success.

‘The Rehearsal’

Without giving too much away, You Can See Everything features significant reenactments due to legal constraints, which make for some of the most bizarre and fascinating moments of the film. Fielder’s comedy series, The Rehearsal, likewise utilizes sets and actors to help ordinary people “rehearse” upcoming personal situations.
