In the Premier League, Viktor Gyökeres is still waiting to earn Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s trust from the start. The Swede has had to make do with four substitute appearances in seven games.
In the Champions League, however, Gyökeres started the first two matches, but was benched in favour of the main rival Kai Havertz for the third-round away game against Bayern Munich.
Gyökeres was brought on in the 68th minute. Although the 28-year-old is still waiting for his first goal of the season for the club, he played a decisive role.
In the 82nd minute, he played the ball into the path of a charging Declan Rice, who made it 2–2 past Manuel Neuer in the home goal. That was also the final score.
Bukayo Saka’s big night in Germany ended after just seven minutes. The Arsenal star injured himself and was forced to leave the match.
Substitute Eberechi Eze had been on the field for 15 minutes when he scored the opening goal in the 25th minute.
Ten minutes later, Bayern equalised when goalscorer Harry Kane found Alphonso Davies in space with a sublime pass.
Just over an hour into the match, Harry Kane got on the scoresheet. Arsenal’s Jurriën Timber handled a shot, and Kane made it 2–1 from the penalty spot.
However, there was no winner after Declan Rice’s late equaliser, assisted by Viktor Gyökeres.
