Just two hours after his final Facebook post, Nonthaburi’s ‘Robocop’ policeman, 28, was dead. A car turned across double yellow lines into his motorcycle’s path. CCTV caught the crash. The elderly driver apologised as 73,000 followers mourned him.
Thailand’s much-loved ‘Robocop of Nonthaburi’ was killed in a horrific road accident on Sunday, triggering an outpouring of grief. The 28-year-old policeman, famous for his extraordinary tactical uniform and 73,000 Facebook followers, died when his motorcycle struck a car making a prohibited right turn. CCTV captured the fatal collision, while police investigated the 70-year-old driver for negligent driving causing death. In a dramatic aftermath, the motorist apologised to the officer’s tearful family and admitted regularly making the disputed turn. Meanwhile, a haunting final Facebook message, posted less than two hours before his death, drew widespread condolences. Fellow officers mourned the popular patrolman as his family prepared to return his body to Kalasin for funeral rites.
A popular young Thai policeman known as the ‘Robocop of Nonthaburi’ was killed in a horrific motorcycle crash on Sunday evening. The 28-year-old officer slammed into a car turning across double solid yellow lines on a busy Nonthaburi road.
CCTV footage captured the fatal collision, while police subsequently questioned the 70-year-old driver. The motorist later apologised to the officer’s grieving family as investigators examined a reported charge of negligent driving causing death.
Meanwhile, the tragedy triggered widespread grief among fellow officers and more than 73,000 Facebook followers. His final social media message, posted less than two hours before his death, has since become a focus for condolences.
Young patrol officer became known as Robocop for his distinctive tactical uniform and equipment
The dead officer was identified as Thanawat Khaochai Kan, a motorcycle patrol policeman attached to Bang Sri Muang Police Station. He was just 28 and had become a familiar figure throughout Nonthaburi, immediately northwest of Bangkok. His Thai name was ธนวัฒน์ เข้าใจการ, although English transliterations of his surname differ between reports.
Locally, he was known as ‘Robocop Mueang Non’, or the Robocop of Nonthaburi. The nickname came from his extraordinary appearance while on patrol.
Unlike most officers, Thanawat regularly wore extensive tactical equipment, with numerous operational tools and accessories attached to his uniform. His heavily equipped appearance resembled the fictional law enforcement character Robocop.
Consequently, the nickname became closely associated with the young officer. His unusual appearance made him instantly recognisable, particularly when travelling on motorcycle patrol. However, his reputation extended well beyond the equipment he carried. Thanawat had established a substantial following through his police work and lively social media presence.
Popular policeman drew over 73,000 Facebook followers before a fatal collision on his journey from duty
His Facebook page, โจ้เม็ดกะจี้, known as Joe Met Kajee, had attracted more than 73,000 followers. Some Thai reports placed the figure closer to 76,000. Separately, he had developed an audience on TikTok, where his distinctive appearance and personality attracted further attention. His online popularity therefore extended beyond the communities served by Bang Sri Muang Police Station.
Residents also knew him through his regular motorcycle patrol duties. Indeed, local community pages subsequently praised his work protecting people in Nonthaburi. His public profile combined an unusual uniform, police duties and a substantial social media audience. Yet his life ended suddenly on Sunday, October 18, shortly after completing duty.
At approximately 5.40 pm, Thanawat was riding a blue Honda Wave 125i motorcycle along Bang Kruai–Sai Noi Road. He was travelling near Soi Paet Muen Samakkhi, in Bang Krang subdistrict, Mueang Nonthaburi district. The location was close to his police station and a residential property adjoining the roadway.
As he approached, a Honda Accord emerged from a roadside house. The vehicle then turned right across the road, directly into the approaching motorcycle’s path. Seconds later, the motorcycle struck the driver’s side of the car with considerable force. The collision threw the young policeman from his motorcycle onto the roadway.
Rescuers fail to save officer as CCTV reveals car crossed double yellow lines before devastating collision
Emergency rescue workers rushed to the scene and attempted to save him. However, his injuries proved fatal. The impact badly damaged the Honda Accord’s driver’s door and cracked its windscreen. The blue Honda Wave also sustained extensive damage. Meanwhile, police began examining the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Investigators subsequently obtained CCTV footage showing the accident. Crucially, they established that the Honda Accord had crossed double solid yellow centre lines. These markings prohibited vehicles from making the right-hand turn attempted by the driver. The manoeuvre immediately became a central issue in the investigation.
The car was driven by a 70-year-old man identified only as Mr Ek. He told investigators that he had been leaving his home to attend a funeral at a nearby temple. According to his statement, he checked the roadway before attempting the right-hand turn. However, he claimed he had not noticed the approaching motorcycle.
The elderly motorist said he only glimpsed a dark shape immediately before the impact. By then, the motorcycle was directly in front of his car. He maintained that he had not seen the policeman approaching in time to avoid the collision. Furthermore, he denied fleeing the scene and insisted he had consumed no alcohol.
Police question elderly driver after fatal crash and examine prohibited right turn seen on CCTV footage
Police subsequently administered a breathalyser test, which returned a zero reading. The driver was then questioned at Bang Sri Muang Police Station. Investigators examined his account alongside CCTV footage, road markings and damage to both vehicles. Notably, their inquiries focused on the prohibited right-hand turn across the double yellow lines.
Thairath subsequently reported that police had initially charged the motorist with negligent driving causing death. However, the precise procedural status of that charge remained to be confirmed. In parallel, Thanawat’s body was transferred to the Institute of Forensic Science for a post-mortem examination.
News of the policeman’s death spread rapidly through Nonthaburi and across Thai social media. His distinctive appearance had already made him a familiar personality among residents and online followers. Consequently, reports of the crash attracted widespread attention from local news organisations and community pages. His nickname, Robocop Mueang Non, featured prominently in coverage.
The young officer had become known for wearing extensive tactical equipment while carrying out patrol duties. Various tools and operational accessories were attached to his uniform, creating his distinctive appearance. As a result, residents and online followers began referring to him as Robocop. The nickname subsequently became a recognisable part of his public identity.
Local residents and fellow officers mourn Robocop as his final Facebook message attracts public attention
Nevertheless, local tributes also focused on his work as a police officer. The Facebook community page ที่นี่ ประเทศนนท์, or Here in Nonthaburi, described Thanawat as a good policeman. It credited him with regularly looking after the safety of local residents. Similarly, the local news outlet Khao Kon Nont praised his service at Bang Sri Muang Police Station.
Other Thai reports used the expression ตำรวจน้ำดี, meaning a good or honourable policeman. Some coverage also described his death as ปิดตำนาน, meaning the end of a legend. These descriptions reflected the affectionate reputation he had established through his police work and public profile. Fellow officers also expressed grief following confirmation of his death.
The reaction extended beyond the police station where Thanawat served. His Facebook page had accumulated more than 73,000 followers before Sunday’s accident. Furthermore, Daily News identified him as a TikTok personality. Together, these platforms had introduced the young policeman to people outside Nonthaburi.
Following the collision, followers began posting condolences and sharing reports of his death. Particular attention centred on a Facebook message published shortly before the accident. At 3.53 pm on Sunday, Thanawat posted what became his final public message. Written in Thai, it read: รอหมดหน้าฝนก่อน เดี๋ยว “หนาว” แน่
Translated into English, the message said: “Just wait until the rainy season ends. Then things will get chilly.”
Final Facebook post draws condolences as elderly driver apologises to grieving family at police station
The remark was a playful reference to the approaching change in the weather. However, less than two hours later, Thanawat was involved in the fatal collision. After news of his death emerged, followers returned to the message and posted condolences. Thai media subsequently highlighted the timing of the post and the sudden accident.
The message attracted particular attention because it had appeared shortly before his final motorcycle journey. Meanwhile, investigators continued questioning the elderly driver at Bang Sri Muang Police Station. By approximately 7.30 pm on Sunday, the 70-year-old motorist had given his account of the crash.
According to Amarin TV, the driver subsequently approached the dead officer’s relatives to apologise. He brought flowers, incense and candles to pay his respects. The motorist then bowed before family members and expressed sorrow over Thanawat’s death. Relatives were reported to have broken down in tears during the encounter.
The apology followed police questioning about the driver’s movements immediately before the collision. However, his explanation also raised further questions about the prohibited turn. The elderly man acknowledged that he regularly made the same right-hand turn when leaving his property. He also disputed the police interpretation of the road markings.
Driver admits regularly making disputed right turn as investigators examine road markings and damage
According to his account, the alternative turning point was considerably farther away from his home. He maintained that the manoeuvre was one he had regularly carried out. Nevertheless, investigators had identified double solid yellow lines across the centre of the roadway. Those markings prohibited the right-hand turn made by the Honda Accord.
His explanation therefore became part of the evidence being considered by police. Investigators had already examined CCTV footage showing the car crossing the motorcycle’s path. Additionally, the damaged vehicles provided physical evidence of the collision’s force and location. The Honda Accord’s driver’s door was badly damaged, while its windscreen was cracked.
The motorcycle also suffered extensive damage, and its rider was thrown onto the road. The collision occurred near the officer’s police station, shortly after he had finished duty. Separately, the motorist’s negative breathalyser result formed part of the investigation. He maintained that he had not been drinking and had not attempted to flee.
Even so, investigators remained focused on the right-hand turn across the prohibited road markings. Police were examining whether negligent driving had caused the 28-year-old officer’s death. The reported initial charge placed the elderly motorist at the centre of a criminal investigation.
Fellow officers and online followers mourn the young patrolman killed shortly after completing his duty
Meanwhile, Thanawat’s death left Bang Sri Muang Police Station mourning one of its most recognisable officers. His heavily equipped patrol uniform had made him particularly familiar to residents. The unusual appearance earned him the Robocop nickname and attracted considerable online attention. However, his popularity also reflected his personality and activities as a policeman.
Local community reports praised his work protecting residents. His social media followers also regularly followed his posts and activities. Consequently, news of the fatal accident reached people who had never personally encountered him on patrol. The response was particularly visible beneath his final Facebook message.
Followers posted condolences after learning that the officer had died shortly after publishing it. In addition, local media continued reporting expressions of grief from colleagues and residents. Thai coverage highlighted the circumstances surrounding the death of the policeman known for his tactical appearance.
On Sunday evening, Thanawat was riding an ordinary blue Honda Wave motorcycle after completing his duties. He was subsequently killed when a car emerged from a residential property and crossed his path. The fatal collision also brought renewed attention to his personal background and family.
Family prepares to return officer to Kalasin as conflicting reports emerge about his official police rank
Thanawat was originally from Kalasin province in northeastern Thailand. Although he served in Nonthaburi, his family planned to return his body to Kalasin for funeral rites. By early Monday, October 19, relatives were making arrangements for his return home. The funeral was to be conducted according to Buddhist traditions.
Before that, his body was transferred for a forensic examination following the accident. The examination formed part of the procedures surrounding his death. Meanwhile, published reports contained inconsistencies concerning his precise police rank.
Some Thai accounts identified him as a Police Lance Corporal, while others described him as a Police Sergeant. Another report used the designation Police Sergeant Major. The descriptions had not been reconciled, although his Thai name remained consistent. English transliterations of his surname also differed.
Nevertheless, the central circumstances of the accident were supported by police accounts and CCTV evidence. The young officer was riding his motorcycle after finishing duty when a car turned across his path. The collision occurred at approximately 5.40 pm on Bang Kruai–Sai Noi Road in Mueang Nonthaburi district.
