Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has promised equal opportunities for talented athletes across Pakistan. He stressed that young players need better training, resources and support to achieve greater success in sports.
Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad, the prime minister congratulated athletes who won medals at the Asian Games. Pakistani players secured two silver and eight bronze medals. Moreover, Shehbaz praised their hard work, dedication and their parents’ prayers for their success.
However, he said Pakistan must do more to promote sports nationwide. Therefore, the government will encourage talented young people from Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. He also said financial support for athletes represents their right, not a favour.
Meanwhile, the prime minister recalled Pakistan’s past achievements in hockey, squash and cricket. He highlighted legendary hockey players Hassan Sardar, Shehnaz Sheikh and Akhtar Rasool. In addition, he praised squash champions Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan for their contributions to Pakistan’s sporting history.
Shehbaz also noted that women athletes continue to advance in cricket, hockey and other sports. Similarly, he stressed the need to develop young talent in football, volleyball, kabaddi and other disciplines. For this purpose, athletes need better training facilities, adequate resources and collective support.

The prime minister recalled how public institutions once supported prominent athletes. He named Pakistan International Airlines, Pakistan Railways and the Water and Power Development Authority among the organisations that provided sporting facilities. He said he had ordered the restoration of this support system during the previous Pakistan Democratic Movement government.
Shehbaz announced plans to hold a sports conference soon. Federal and provincial officials, former sports stars and current athletes will attend the event. Participants will discuss measures to strengthen sports and help Pakistan regain international recognition through sporting achievements.
