KARACHI – Senior Pakistani actor Faisal Qureshi has shared his views on why Pakistani television dramas were banned in India, claiming that their popularity was challenging the narrative about Pakistan promoted by the Indian government.
In a recent interview, the actor discussed the Pakistani entertainment industry and the growing popularity of its television dramas among international audiences.
Asked about the ban on Pakistani dramas in India, Faisal Qureshi said these dramas and shows had influenced Indian viewers’ perceptions of Pakistan by presenting Pakistanis as educated, modern and tolerant people.
He claimed that the popularity of Pakistani dramas was undermining the Indian government’s narrative about Pakistan which prompted the Indian authorities to ban the programmes when an opportunity arose.
According to Qureshi, the restrictions did not stop Indian audiences from seeking out Pakistani content. He claimed that India witnessed a surge in virtual private network (VPN) downloads following the ban.
The actor also criticised the portrayal of Pakistan in films, saying some productions promoted an agenda and spread hatred.
Pakistani dramas have attracted audiences beyond the country, particularly in markets where viewers follow their storylines, performances and cultural themes.
