Binance founder Changpeng Zhao says the economist will eventually be right about Bitcoin, but only in a technical sense.
Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, has reignited a long-running public exchange with economist and gold advocate Peter Schiff. CZ took aim at Schiff's persistent skepticism toward Bitcoin, according to reporting from U.Today.
Schiff has spent years warning that Bitcoin is a speculative bubble destined to collapse. His most recent commentary, highlighted by The Cryptonomist, reiterates a forecast that Bitcoin's market capitalization could eventually drop by more than 99% from its peak. That would effectively wipe out the asset's value in Schiff's view, consistent with his long-held stance that Bitcoin has no intrinsic worth.
CZ's response, reported by BeInCrypto, took a different angle. He reportedly conceded that Schiff could one day be technically correct about Bitcoin's trajectory. But CZ attached a significant condition to that concession, suggesting the scenario in which Schiff's prediction comes true would require Bitcoin's price to rise substantially higher first. In other words, even a severe percentage decline from a much higher future valuation would still leave Bitcoin worth more than it is today.
The exchange is the latest chapter in a long-standing ideological divide between Bitcoin advocates and traditional hard-money proponents like Schiff. Schiff has built a public following around his advocacy for gold as the superior store of value. He has repeatedly dismissed Bitcoin as lacking the physical scarcity and historical track record that underpin precious metals.
CZ, by contrast, remains one of the most prominent figures in the cryptocurrency industry. He built Binance into the world's largest crypto exchange by trading volume before stepping down as chief executive. He continues to comment publicly on market trends and industry debates, often responding directly to prominent Bitcoin critics.
These kinds of public disputes are common in crypto markets, where price volatility fuels recurring debates between skeptics and believers. Schiff's critiques tend to resurface whenever Bitcoin experiences sharp price swings, drawing renewed attention from both supporters and detractors. CZ's willingness to engage, even dismissively, reflects the continued cultural prominence of these debates within the broader crypto community.
Market Impact
The exchange between CZ and Schiff is unlikely to move Bitcoin's price directly, since it reflects a long-standing rhetorical rivalry rather than new market data. However, such public commentary from a figure as prominent as CZ can shape sentiment within crypto communities, where influential voices often amplify broader market narratives.
Schiff's renewed warnings about a potential severe decline in Bitcoin's market capitalization may also resurface among skeptical investors and traditional finance commentators. For now, the dispute remains a battle of competing narratives rather than a development with measurable market consequences.
The latest exchange underscores a debate that has shadowed Bitcoin since its earliest days, pitting its advocates against traditional hard-money skeptics. Whether either side's long-term prediction proves accurate remains to be seen.
