The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Venatius Ikem, has resigned from his position with immediate effect, citing what he described as a crisis of direction and leadership coherence within the party.
Ikem announced his decision in a resignation letter addressed to the party’s National Secretary at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja, with a copy sent to the state secretary.
In the letter, the outgoing chairman pointed to internal divisions and disagreements among party stakeholders, suggesting that the prevailing situation had made it difficult to effectively discharge his responsibilities.
He expressed concern over the party’s direction and the lack of cohesion among its leadership, warning that unresolved differences could undermine its unity and political prospects.
Ikem described his resignation as a difficult decision reached after careful reflection, while expressing appreciation to party leaders, members and supporters who stood by him during his tenure.
He acknowledged the support of Senator Sandy Onor and Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, as well as other stakeholders who contributed to his political journey.

Despite stepping down from the state chairmanship, Ikem reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Cross River State and Nigeria.
His resignation comes as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, leaving questions about the implications for the PDP’s leadership and unity in Cross River State.
It remains unclear what political direction Ikem intends to take following his resignation.
