AI can make a fraudulent message sound fluent, clone a familiar voice, and even create a convincing video call. Drawing on years of experience operating in global markets and supporting tens of thousands of clients, BITmarkets has shared a practical guide to help users recognize fraud and avoid falling victim.
A message about a supposedly compromised account may appear to come from a platform, bank, public authority, or even someone you know. The sender may use your name, refer to real account details, and communicate in your language without the spelling mistakes once associated with online fraud. None of these details prove that the contact is genuine.
The scale of the threat is growing. According to the Chainalysis 2026 Crypto Crime Report, addresses linked to crypto scams received at least USD 14 billion during 2025. Chainalysis expects the figure to exceed USD 17 billion as it identifies more illicit addresses. Impersonation scams grew by more than 1,400% compared with 2024.
The same research found that scam operations with demonstrable on-chain links to AI vendors extracted an average of USD 3.2 million per operation, compared with USD 719,000 for operations without those links. That is about 4.5 times more revenue per scam. The comparison does not cover every AI-assisted fraud, but it shows how AI can help organized scam networks operate more efficiently and at greater scale.
Why fake support is harder to recognise
• Natural language. Generative AI can produce clear, convincing emails and chat messages in many languages, removing obvious spelling and grammar warning signs.
• Cloned voices and manipulated video. A familiar voice or face on a call is no longer reliable proof of identity. Audio can be cloned, and live video can be altered or generated.
• Personal context. Information from data breaches, public social media profiles, and previous messages can make a false approach sound specific and credible.
• More conversations at once. Automation lets one operation maintain many personalized conversations at once, increasing the number of potential victims it can target.
The safest rule is therefore simple: verify the channel rather than trusting the voice, profile picture or information the sender knows about you.
Security checklist
One warning sign does not automatically prove fraud, but it is enough reason to stop and verify the request independently.
• Unsolicited approach. Did the person contact you first about a problem you never reported?
• Credentials or codes. Are you being asked for a password, two-factor authentication code, SMS code, seed phrase, or private key?
• A so-called safe wallet. Are you being told to move funds to a secure, verification, or recovery wallet? This is a common impersonation tactic.
• Payment before access. Are you asked to pay a fee, tax, or deposit to unlock an account, release a withdrawal, or recover funds already lost?
• Immediate deadline. Are you told that you have only minutes or hours to prevent a loss, account closure, or legal action?
