NIBONG TEBAL: The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) has rejected representations submitted by activist Arun Dorasamy, whose trial for making a statement intended to cause public alarm will proceed.
Deputy public prosecutor Airina Syazreen Zainurin informed the court of the AGC's decision during proceedings before magistrate Balqis Roslin at the Jawi magistrates' court here today.
The court fixed Feb 1, 2027 for the trial, with the prosecution set to call about seven witnesses.
Arun, whose real name is Arumugam Dorasamy, is represented by lawyer T Gunaseelan.
On March 17, the 56-year-old claimed trial to a charge of posting a statement that could incite public disorder on his Instagram account at 3.45pm on March 12, 2025 at a shopping centre in Batu Kawan, Seberang Perai Selatan.
The statement reportedly called on a Hindu organisation to stage a street protest if no action was taken against independent preacher Zamri Vinoth over a controversial video involving three local radio presenters accused of mocking a religious festival.
Arun is charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine or both, upon conviction.
