Brock Purdy has had an impressive rise since being selected as the final pick in the 2022 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers.
Four years later, Purdy is firmly in the MVP conversation and his team are in great form, most recently beating the Washington Commanders 23-17.
Brock’s rise has been slow, but not every player in the NFL who goes on to be great joins the league with the highest expectations.
One example of that is Joe Montana, who ended up going on to win four Super Bowls after being drafted in the third round with the 82nd overall pick back in 1979.
Brock Purdy compared to Joe Montana
Now, when speaking to CBS, NFL analyst Pete Prisco has made the comparison between Purdy and Montana.
He said: “He’s [Purdy] got a killer instinct and he might not look like it, but he does. Joe Montana never looked like it either. But they did.
“And where was Joe Montana drafted? In the third round. He didn’t come in, everybody saying he’s going to be a great player, with first round pick ‘Oh, I’m it’.
“He worked at it. Brock Purdy was the last player picked. You talk about his work ethic, he’s got to prove to people he belongs. Well, he’s not only proved to people he belongs. He’s proved to people that he excels at it.”
The 49ers have not won the Super Bowl in the 21st century, losing in their last three appearances.
But they are 6-0 this season and with Purdy and many of his teammates in top form, fans may believe that this season will be their time to break that unwanted streak.
