Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, special envoys of the U.S. president, have postponed their visit to Moscow, Axios reported.
According to Axios, the trip has been postponed at least until it becomes clear whether Ukraine and its EU allies are prepared to accept a new peace proposal, the details of which remain unknown.
Axios reported on October 9 that Witkoff and Kushner were pushing “new ideas and proposals” to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. At the time, it said Donald Trump’s special envoys were planning to visit Russia before the end of October to discuss “new ideas” with Russian leadership. The Russian state news agency TASS reported the same day that the envoys’ visit to Russia was expected “within the next two weeks.”
Witkoff and Kushner last visited Moscow on September 5. They then traveled to Kyiv, where they met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The New York Times reported on October 10 that the United States had offered to unfreeze billions of dollars in Russian assets frozen in the West to persuade Russia to agree to a partial ceasefire in the war with Ukraine. A day earlier, the Kyiv Independent reported that Russia was seeking the lifting of some sanctions in exchange for an energy truce or an end to strikes in the Black Sea.
Donald Trump announced on October 11 that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a truce in the energy sector. Zelensky told Axios that the truce came as news to him. As of the morning of October 12, Russian authorities had not confirmed they had agreed to the truce.
