HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (329180.KS) has built the world's largest ammonia-fueled vessel.
The company said on the 22nd that it held a naming ceremony at its Ulsan shipyard for a very large ammonia carrier with a capacity of 93,000 cubic meters, the largest of its kind in the world. About 110 people attended, including Lee Sang-kyun, vice chairman of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries; Cyril Ducau, chief executive of EPS; Low Kum Yen, chairman of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA); and John McDonald, chairman of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
The vessel is the first of two ships in a series that HD Hyundai Heavy Industries won from Singapore-based EPS in 2023, and has been named Terra Clove. The name combines "Terra," Latin for earth, and "Clove," meaning flower bud. Measuring 230 meters long, 36.5 meters wide and 23.6 meters high, the ship carries four cargo tanks designed and built with the company's own technology, allowing it to transport 93,000 cubic meters of ammonia and liquefied petroleum gas safely.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries fitted the ship with an ammonia dual-fuel propulsion system, enabling it to run on either conventional marine fuel or ammonia, a cleaner alternative. The vessel also has a shaft generator that produces electricity using the rotating shaft of the propulsion engine, along with devices to cut nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide emissions.
The ship is also equipped with safety systems, including a device that monitors ammonia leaks in real time and a system to reduce ammonia emissions.
In April, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries built and delivered the world's first mid-size ammonia-fueled gas carrier, with a capacity of 46,000 cubic meters.
"We consider it an honor to have built next-generation eco-friendly vessels together with EPS over the past 30 years," said Lee Sang-kyun, vice chairman of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. "Building the world's largest ammonia-fueled ship is an important step forward toward decarbonizing shipping."
