4 takeaways from Week 5 Rams-Bills OT thriller

The Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills delivered a Monday Night Football thriller in Week 5, with overtime deciding a game that exposed both the promise and the problems of Sean McVay’s team. The Rams showed resilience against one of the NFL’s toughest opponents, but costly mistakes and another special teams catastrophe threatened to overshadow their performance. From clutch plays to missed opportunities, Los Angeles left plenty to evaluate as the season moves forward. Here are four key takeaways from the Rams’ overtime battle with Buffalo.

1st Down: Special Teams Makeover (Once again…)

Five games into the 2026 season and the Rams are in the midst of another special teams yearly trainwreck. The Rams started with the game with a special teams blunder, a huge kick return by Buffalo. And the Rams last possession of the night ended with a special teams blunder. The Rams special teams issue has never been solved, it’s been band-aid after band-aid. The result: close loss after close loss.

Sean McVay also commented after the loss that “He will evaluate everything moving forward…”

*Sidenote: Stay tuned for an article later this week about how the Rams will address this situation with a trade

2nd Down: Tyler Higbee deserves huge apology from TST

There have been so many voices over the years that have questioned Tyler Higbee’s play and contracts throughout his tenure as a Ram. The Rams all-time receiving TE leader deserves better. He has been huge for LA this year considering Los Angeles lost Terrance Ferguson to IR (ankle) and Colby Parkinson has seen significant regression from last year.

HIGZ, HIGBEAST, BIG-RIG-HIGZ is the type of guy I want on this team and on the field. Period.

3rd Down: Conversion battle

If there is a silver lining to this loss, it should be this. The Rams are winning 3rd downs on offense and defense. The offense was 7 of 14 (50%) on 3rd down and 2 of 2 (100%) on 4th down. On the other side of the football, the Rams defense only allowed 2 of 7 3rd down conversions (28.5%). That is a recipe for being a Super Bowl team. Even though the Rams are not playing at their full potential (and are without key players), they are positioning themselves where they need to be. It will matter come January and February.

4th Down: Run Defense led to 37 points against

Hard to win when you give up 234 yards on the ground; averaging 6.3 yards per play. The Bills kept running down LA’s throat with James Cook and then Josh Allen would scramble up the middle when needed. Los Angeles could not solve it and explains why there is a stark difference from last week’s defensive performance and tonight’s game.
