Arch Manning has dealt with a challenging season for the Texas Longhorns. But head coach Steve Sarkisian believes the young quarterback's changing demeanor could be the right step for his future.
During a press conference ahead of Texas' matchup against No. 7 Ole Miss, Sarkisian described Manning as "edgy," suggesting that his quarterback is beginning to respond to the criticism surrounding his performances. Given how the last few games have gone for Manning, this point was going to come sooner rather than later.
"I would use the word edgy, and I like it," Sarkisian said. "He's edgy right now." He also talked about the outside expectations and media attention that have influenced Manning's public image. Before, he was easygoing and has evolved under the spotlight.
"Somebody texted me today that we had lost the 'Ahh Shucks' kid, and we created something else," Sarkisian said. "I don't know if we lost him. We created this. We did. All of us. Y'all included. Me. The whole thing, right. Everybody on ESPN, we've created this."
Manning's attitude is the best response to criticism he has faced thus far. "At some point, he's gotta fight back," Sarkisian added.
Manning's struggles have become a major storyline following consecutive losses to Oklahoma and Florida.
Against the Sooners, he threw two interceptions, including a late turnover that helped set up the game-winning field goal. However, going up against the Gators was another story. Manning completed 14 of 20 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown but lost a fumble.
Texas enters the Ole Miss game at 4-2 overall and 1-2 in SEC play. Manning has completed 63.9% of his passes for 1,295 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions this season.
With questions emerging about his starting role and NFL future, Manning faces an important opportunity to change the narrative. With the pressure of living up to his last name, can he rally Texas' future?
No. 19 Texas faces No. 7 Ole Miss on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
