Adwoa Loud, Zakaria Abdulai, Prof. Ransford Gyampo
Media personality, Nhyiraba Adwoa Loud, has added her voice to the growing outrage over sexual abuse allegations at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
According to her, authorities are unable to prosecute the headmaster because even Prof. Ransford Gyampo, who was fingered in the BBC’s “Sex for Grades” investigation, has been appointed as CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority by President John Mahama, which has emboldened most men to engage in such act.
This comes after investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni’s latest documentary, “Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow”, which details allegations that the Obuasi SHTS Headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, has for years abused female students of the school.
According to Manasseh, what started as five reported cases rose to 14 during his investigation, and now 19 female students have come forward with similar accounts.
The documentary captures harrowing testimonies from the students, including allegations of rape, sexual assault and threats.
Despite the gravity of the allegations:
– The headmaster is still walking free.
– Reports indicate the Ghana Education Service (GES) initially recommended a mere TRANSFER to another school, meaning he could be moved to abuse girls elsewhere, instead of being sacked.
– He is also reportedly still serving on the board of the National Film Authority.
Authorities knew months before action was taken. The MCE for Obuasi, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, confirmed she was informed last year after a former sports master reported that the headmaster had slept with a student.
Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, also confirmed he intervened when students threatened to riot over the issue.
Yet the headmaster remained at post until JoyNews began inquiries and Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu ordered his suspension on October 13 and referred the case to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
In a long post on Instagram, the outspoken journalist wrote: “Where is the Gender Minister? We have a female Vice President, yet no strong statement has come from the Ministry of Gender to assure parents and young girls that they are safe.
“If this does not bother you, you do not understand the gravity. Your daughters, nieces, sisters, friends and mothers are NOT SAFE. Because his type is everywhere, and girls continue to live in fear every single day.
“This is sickening. When Prof. Gyampo, who was fingered in the BBC’s “Sex for Grades” investigation, can be appointed as CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority by the President, what signal are we sending? That sexual misconduct has no consequences if you have power?
“Go and watch Manasseh’s documentary. See for yourself how broken our system is. Our young girls deserve justice, not silence.”
