Signs are mounting on both sides of the China-North Korea border that the New Yalu River Bridge will finally open in October 2026. Chinese staff have started regular shifts at the crossing, and North Korea has trucks waiting to haul cargo.
A Daily NK source in China said employees at facilities serving the bridge in Dandong, Liaoning province, began reporting for duty on Oct. 8. Their start came right after China’s National Day holiday, which ran from Oct. 1 to 7. The weeklong break, known as Golden Week, marks the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
The staff received their assignments some time ago but had not been working regular hours until now, the source said. A proper schedule is now in place, and employees commute to their posts every day.
On the North Korean side, authorities have reportedly serviced several dozen freight trucks for the new route. The vehicles are on standby so shipments can begin as soon as the bridge opens.
“The staff are in place and the vehicles are ready, so people believe the opening is imminent,” the source said. “The mood is clearly different from before, when we waited with no idea of when it would open.”
Many people in China now point to Oct. 15 as the most likely date for the opening ceremony. The event was first expected on Oct. 6, the anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and North Korea. Beijing and Pyongyang established formal relations on that date in 1949, days after the People’s Republic of China was founded.
“As I understand it, the ceremony was supposed to take place on the 6th, but the schedule was pushed back,” the source said. “Now people are saying it will happen on the 15th, though nobody knows exactly why it was delayed.”
Korean Peninsula tensions may have delayed New Yalu River Bridge opening
Chinese traders active in North Korea-China trade suspect rising military tension on the Korean Peninsula played a role in the delay. They point to a landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) last month and a North Korean ballistic missile launch this month. The DMZ is the heavily fortified buffer zone that has divided the two Koreas since the 1953 Korean War armistice.
In their view, Beijing may have shifted the timeline out of concern over how the international community would react. A high-profile ceremony with Pyongyang could draw unwanted attention while tensions remain high.
“Preparations for the opening are already complete, but China could not entirely ignore how the international community would see it,” the source said. “People are saying China pushed the date back a little given the current atmosphere.”
This is only one of several theories circulating in China, however. No direct link between the postponement and tensions on the Korean Peninsula has been confirmed.
For now, Chinese traders care less about the exact opening date than about how the bridge will reshape trade flows. Once the new crossing opens, cargo now concentrated on the older Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge should spread out. That shift could significantly change logistics between Dandong and Sinuiju. Built in 1943 under Japanese colonial rule, the Friendship Bridge carries rail traffic and a single road lane and handles much of bilateral trade.
Traders are watching closely because they will need to adjust their business plans to the new rules. Key questions include what cargo can clear customs at the new bridge, how much volume it can handle and how vehicles will move across it.
The New Yalu River Bridge links Dandong with Sinuiju in North Pyongan province. China financed the roughly 3-kilometer cable-stayed bridge to ease congestion on the aging crossing downstream and expand cross-border trade. Construction wrapped up in 2014, but unfinished access roads, customs facilities and other infrastructure on the North Korean side kept it closed for more than a decade.
With signs of an imminent opening now appearing on both sides of the border, hopes are rising that the long-stalled crossing will finally carry traffic. Neither Beijing nor Pyongyang has officially announced a date, however, so it remains to be seen whether the ceremony will take place on Oct. 15.

Daily NK operates networks of sources inside North Korea who document events in real-time and transmit information through secure channels. Unlike reporting based on state media, satellite imagery, or defector accounts from years past, our journalism comes directly from people currently living under the regime. We verify reports through multiple independent sources and cross-reference details before publication.
Our sources remain anonymous because contact with foreign media is treated as a capital offense in North Korea — discovery means imprisonment or execution. This network-based approach allows Daily NK to report on developments other outlets cannot access: market trends, policy implementation, public sentiment, and daily realities that never appear in official narratives.
Maintaining these secure communication channels and protecting source identities requires specialized protocols and constant vigilance. Daily NK serves as a bridge between North Koreans and the outside world, documenting what’s happening inside one of the world’s most closed societies.
