The myTNB app lets you check your TNB account, bills, and electricity usage. If your home has an activated smart meter, you can also see much more detailed consumption data throughout the billing month.
TNB also provides the same type of account access through the myTNB Portal.
The main difference is:
- With a smart meter: you can track detailed usage patterns before the monthly bill arrives.
- Without a smart meter: myTNB can still show your bills and account information, but it does not show a live running total of the electricity you are using at home.
How do I check my electricity usage on myTNB?
Log in to myTNB, select your electricity account, and open the usage or consumption view.
For customers with activated smart meters, TNB provides detailed consumption information that can be viewed in half-hourly intervals through its digital services.
This makes it easier to spot patterns such as:
- higher electricity use during hot afternoons;
- increased air-conditioner use at night;
- heavier weekend consumption; or
- a sudden change after adding a new appliance.
Instead of looking only at the ringgit amount on your bill, check whether your kWh usage has also increased.
Is the electricity usage in myTNB real-time?
Not exactly. Smart-meter data is much more frequent than conventional meter readings, but it is not a second-by-second live electricity monitor.
TNB's smart meter records electricity consumption in half-hourly intervals and sends the readings remotely.
So myTNB can give you a relatively recent picture of when electricity is being used, but you should not expect the graph to change immediately when you switch an appliance on.
This is still much more useful for monitoring consumption than waiting for one meter reading at the end of the billing period.
What can I see in myTNB if I do not have a smart meter?
You can still see your electricity bills and manage your TNB account, but the consumption shown is not your home's live usage.
A conventional meter does not continuously send half-hourly readings to TNB.
So if your latest bill says you used a certain number of kWh, that represents the electricity recorded for that billing period. Electricity you have used since that reading will not appear as a continuously updating total.
In simple terms:
No smart meter = billed consumption, not live household consumption.
Smart meter = much more frequent usage information during the month.
Do I need a smart meter to track daily electricity use?
Yes. Detailed day-to-day electricity monitoring through myTNB depends on an activated smart meter.
TNB says smart meters automatically record electricity usage and send the information remotely, allowing customers to view half-hourly energy information through myTNB.
A smart meter does not automatically reduce your electricity use. Its main benefit is giving you better information so you can see when consumption rises and decide whether to change your habits.
For example, you may notice that usage rises sharply every evening when several air conditioners are switched on.
How do I get a TNB smart meter installed?
TNB is replacing conventional meters with smart meters progressively, and the smart meter and standard installation are free under its rollout programme.
TNB says the usual installation process is:
- You receive notice before installation starts in your area.
- TNB or its certified contractor may contact you before the appointment.
- The technician identifies themselves when they arrive.
- Electricity is temporarily switched off while the meter is changed.
- Installation generally takes around 30 to 60 minutes.
- Once the system is ready, you can use myTNB to view the available smart-meter information.
You do not buy and install a TNB smart meter yourself.
Will I get a smart meter if I apply for Time of Use?
To use TNB's Time of Use (ToU) tariff, your premises need a compatible activated smart meter.
TNB's current ToU scheme is available to eligible Domestic and low-voltage customers with smart-meter installations. If you do not yet have a smart meter, check your eligibility and installation status with TNB before applying.
Can condos and apartments get TNB smart meters?
Yes, condo and apartment units can have TNB smart meters, but the building's metering arrangement matters.
High-rise residential buildings commonly have individual meters grouped together in dedicated meter rooms or meter cages. TNB's metering guidelines specifically provide for this type of arrangement in high-, medium-, and low-rise apartments.
If your unit has its own individual TNB account and meter, smart-meter installation and ToU may be possible, subject to TNB's requirements'.
Installation may also require access to a shared meter room and suitable telecommunications coverage.
The situation is different if the building receives electricity through a bulk-supply arrangement and residents are billed by the building management rather than directly by TNB. TNB's supply guidelines allow multi-tenanted premises to use either bulk supply or individual supply arrangements.
A useful first check is therefore:
"""Do I receive my electricity bill directly from TNB under my own unit's account?"
If yes, your unit is much more straightforward to assess for smart-meter and ToU eligibility.
Can myTNB tell me which appliance is using the most electricity?
No. myTNB shows electricity use for the whole premises, not individual appliances.
What it can tell you is when consumption increased.
For example, if the graph repeatedly rises after 8pm, you can think about what normally runs at that time:
- air conditioners;
- an electric water heater;
- EV charging;
- a clothes dryer; or
- cooking appliances.
The app gives you the timing clue. You still need to connect it with what was happening in the home.
What is the Energy Budget feature in myTNB?
Energy Budget lets eligible smart-meter customers set a monthly budget and receive alerts as electricity use approaches it.
This can be more useful than discovering at the end of the month that consumption was much higher than expected.
It is particularly helpful during periods when usage can change quickly, such as:
- very hot weather;
- school holidays;
- having more people at home; or
- using air conditioning for longer.
How can myTNB help me understand a higher electricity bill?
Start by checking whether your kWh consumption actually increased.
If the bill is higher and your usage graph also shows higher kWh, there is likely to have been a change in household electricity consumption.
Look for:
Hot days vs cooler days
Did air-conditioning use increase?
Weekdays vs weekends
Is electricity use higher when more people are home?
Day vs night
When does your household use the most electricity?
Before and after a new appliance
Did consumption change after something new was installed?
Your bill can also be affected by applicable tariff charges and adjustments, so checking kWh first helps separate higher consumption from changes in electricity cost.
FAQ
Which TNB app should I use?
Use the official myTNB app from Tenaga Nasional Berhad. You can also access TNB account services through the myTNB Portal.
Can I see today's electricity usage without a smart meter?
Not as detailed ongoing usage. Without an activated smart meter, myTNB does not receive the same half-hourly consumption information from your home.
Is a TNB smart meter free?
TNB states that smart meters and their standard installation are free under its rollout programme.
Can a condo owner apply for ToU?
Potentially, yes, particularly where the unit has its own TNB account and individual meter. Buildings using bulk electricity supply may have a different arrangement.
Does installing a smart meter lower my electricity bill?
Not by itself. A smart meter gives you more detailed information so you can identify high-use periods and make changes that may reduce consumption.
