Liverpool Face Victor Munoz Injury Concern Ahead of Villarreal Champions League Clash
Liverpool’s preparations for Tuesday night’s Champions League meeting with Villarreal have been complicated by uncertainty surrounding Victor Munoz, with the Spanish winger missing Monday’s training session at the AXA Training Centre.
For Andoni Iraola, the timing is particularly frustrating. Liverpool have begun to build momentum following a difficult defeat to Manchester City, and Munoz played an important role in Saturday’s 2-1 comeback victory over Brentford.
His potential absence would leave the Liverpool head coach with another selection problem during an increasingly demanding period of the season.
Victor Munoz Injury Raises Liverpool Concerns
Munoz was instrumental in Liverpool’s recovery against Brentford, scoring the equaliser as the Reds overturned an early deficit to secure three valuable Premier League points.
However, there were indications during the match that the Spaniard was experiencing physical discomfort. He required treatment on two separate occasions before eventually being replaced by Joe Gomez late in the contest.
His subsequent absence from Monday’s training session has inevitably raised questions about his availability for Villarreal’s visit to Anfield.

There has been no confirmation regarding the severity of the problem, leaving Iraola facing an anxious wait before finalising his starting eleven.
Munoz’s attacking qualities have provided Liverpool with valuable options, particularly his willingness to carry possession forward and attack defenders directly. Losing that threat would require another adjustment to an attacking structure that has already undergone significant changes this season.
Iraola Faces Growing Liverpool Injury Problems
Liverpool’s injury situation has become increasingly complicated following the weekend’s victory.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong both sustained injuries against Brentford, adding to an existing list of unavailable players.
Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and Hugo Ekitike remain sidelined with longer-term problems, restricting Iraola’s flexibility across several positions.
Meanwhile, Federico Chiesa participated in Monday’s training session despite being omitted from Liverpool’s Champions League squad. Wataru Endo, another player excluded from the European selection, was absent.
The challenge for Iraola involves managing the immediate demands of Champions League football while protecting a squad already dealing with considerable physical strain.
With fixtures arriving in quick succession, Liverpool’s medical assessments could prove influential in determining the composition of Tuesday’s team.
Liverpool Seek Third Consecutive Champions League Victory
Liverpool have made an encouraging start to their European campaign, collecting maximum points from their opening two fixtures.
A 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid at Anfield was followed by an entertaining 6-3 success away to LASK.
Those results have provided a useful platform, particularly given Liverpool’s occasional inconsistency in domestic competition.
The Reds have won six of their previous eight matches across all competitions, including four of their last five.
Their only defeat during that five-match sequence came against Manchester City, who secured a comprehensive 3-0 victory.
Liverpool have scored 11 goals and conceded seven across those five fixtures, illustrating both their attacking productivity and the defensive issues Iraola continues to address.
Villarreal Arrive at Anfield With Renewed Confidence
Villarreal present a potentially awkward challenge after recovering from a difficult sequence of results.
The Spanish club recently ended a seven-match Champions League losing streak by defeating Napoli 3-1, having initially fallen behind.
They have subsequently recorded three victories, one draw and one defeat across their last five matches, conceding only three goals during that period.
A goalless draw against Elche at the weekend followed their European success, while their sole recent defeat came against Real Madrid.
For Liverpool, maintaining their perfect Champions League record would represent another important step towards securing qualification.
Much will depend on Iraola’s available personnel, with Munoz’s fitness now among the most pressing questions.
Liverpool have demonstrated resilience in recent matches. Tuesday offers another opportunity to sustain that progress, provided their growing injury concerns can be managed effectively.
