Rio Ngumoha Contract Talks Continue as Liverpool Teen Thrives in New Role Under Andoni Iraola
Rio Ngumoha has moved to calm any suggestion of uncertainty over his Liverpool future, with the teenager confirming discussions over improved terms are progressing while he keeps his full focus on football.
The 18-year-old remains one of the most closely watched young players at Anfield after a remarkable rise over the past year. Having signed his first professional deal in September 2025, Ngumoha was always expected to revisit those terms once he turned 18 and established himself further in the senior setup. That development has arrived quickly.
In the period since putting pen to paper on that initial contract, Ngumoha has gone from highly rated academy talent to England international, collecting 29 senior appearances for Liverpool during a breakthrough campaign and strengthening his reputation as one of the brightest attacking prospects in the game.
Asked directly about the contract situation after Liverpool’s 2-1 win at Brentford, the winger kept his answer measured. “To be fair, that is all with my agent now,” Ngumoha said. “I think it is all going well. I am not too sure. I just let the football do the talking at the end of the day.
“So I enjoy playing and all of that stuff about contracts is in the back of my mind really. I just play for the club, play for Liverpool and hopefully I can carry on doing well.”
Rio Ngumoha contract remains background issue
There has been external attention around Ngumoha for some time, with Bayern Munich tentatively linked during the summer window, and his profile has only grown since then. His emergence on the international stage added further weight to Liverpool’s need to secure his long-term future on terms more reflective of his standing in the squad.
From the club’s perspective, there is little sense of alarm. The expectation internally has long been that a fresh agreement would follow naturally once he reached the relevant age threshold, and Ngumoha’s own comments suggest there is no appetite for unnecessary drama.
Instead, his priority appears to be maintaining momentum in a season that continues to gather pace. “My season is going well. As you say, I’m playing off the left and the right, I’m improving, working hard and it’s been good. Do I have a favourite position? No, not anymore to be fair. I think I am getting to grips with the right wing now and I am liking it, it has given me another asset [to me game], so that is good.”
That tactical flexibility has become a central part of his development under Andoni Iraola, who has made a clear effort to broaden the youngster’s game rather than allow him to become fixed in one role too early.
Andoni Iraola shaping Liverpool winger role
Ngumoha first built his reputation predominantly from the left, where his direct running and willingness to attack defenders marked him out as a serious talent. Liverpool’s attacking depth, however, has evolved. The arrival of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain for £123m increased competition on that flank and accelerated the need for versatility.

Rather than view that as a setback, Ngumoha has embraced the shift. Iraola began using him on the right during pre-season and the player has responded positively, seeing the adjustment as another layer to his attacking identity.
“Yeah, I definitely had to [adapt after Barcola signed]. The good thing about all of us is we can all play on both the left and the right side.
“So I think, like I say, it is always healthy competition at this club at the end of the day, so I think if we’re all playing well then no-one can be disappointed at the end of the day. It is all about the team with us, so that is good.”
He expanded on that further, saying: “I think there’s definitely room to improve and I have been working hard on the training pitch. I went away with England and I was playing on the right side.
“So I learned a lot there as well and I have enjoyed it to be fair. I am enjoying this challenge and to be able to play off both sides is important. So it is good.
“I think [playing on the right] gives me a bit unpredictability, so if teams see me playing, they might think I am on the left but I can offer something different on the right.
“So it is good, I think at a young age, being able to play off the right or the opposite side and be unpredictable, I think that is something that is really key and I am enjoying it. It is good.”
That unpredictability is valued highly within elite attacking units, and Liverpool’s coaching staff are understood to see broad tactical education as essential for Ngumoha’s long-term ceiling.
Liverpool youngster makes impact at Brentford
His contribution at the Gtech Community Stadium offered another timely example. Introduced in the second half, Ngumoha helped shift the momentum as Liverpool came from behind to win 2-1. Keane Lewis-Potter had opened the scoring before Brentford’s task became harder when Yehor Yarmoliuk was dismissed for headbutting Jeremy Jacquet. Victor Munoz equalised, Alexander Isak struck the winner, and Ngumoha’s running caused further damage late on when Vitaly Janelt fouled him for a second bookable offence.
The winger felt clear about his brief from the moment he entered the pitch. “I think I already knew what I needed to do when I came on and that was to impact the game on both sides of the pitch and thankfully I did that,” said Ngumoha.
He also underlined the squad’s collective drive after a recent setback. “I think it’s no surprise that we are winning games because we have been training hard and working well, so it is no surprise. We are just hungrier than ever really, so it has been top.
“We know when you come to Brentford away, it is never going to be an easy game but I just think that we found that hunger within the squad and second half we turned it around. Obviously the red card helped us a lot as well.
“The mentality is stronger than ever, better than ever. So we took one step back (against Manchester City) and two steps forward, so I think now we have just got to focus on the Champions League game (against Villarreal on Tuesday).”
England progress boosting Ngumoha development
Ngumoha’s growth has also been influenced by his time with England, where exposure to established wide players has offered fresh detail to absorb. “Playing on the right was good for England but also watching the likes of Anthony Gordon, Bukayo Saka , they are top, top wingers.
“Training with them every day and just seeing what they do, that can really help me and I take some of the stuff they tell me on board and it is really helpful.”
At Liverpool, Iraola’s messages have been equally clear. The head coach wants aggression in one-v-one situations, constant threat in possession, and total commitment without the ball. Ngumoha appears fully aligned with that brief.
“I think obviously he just wants me to take on the player in the one-v-one duels,” Ngumoha said. “He wants me to be a threatening player. But off the ball, he just wants me to help the team however I can.
“So whether it is about me pressing or working the full-backs, whatever it is, I am just taking on what he is saying and looking to improve. I am enjoying working with him and enjoying improving.
“I can’t thank the gaffer much more really for putting me on so early in the game and like I said, whether I start or if I come on, I just have the same mentality.”
For now, the contract process continues in the background. On the pitch, Liverpool have every reason to feel encouraged. Ngumoha is developing, adapting and delivering, and those remain the strongest indicators of where this situation is likely to lead.
