Vertical Aerospace’s Michael Cervenka explains how their Velocopter eVTOL aircraft is set to transform urgent freight and remote logistics. This electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle combines helicopter agility with airplane speed, reaching places conventional transport can’t. Learn about its capabilities, certification timeline, and the massive impact it will have on time-critical deliveries, defense, and humanitarian missions by 2030.
Vertical Aerospace plans to begin operational cargo service with its Velo electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft in 2030, following a certification target of late 2028 or 2029. The company is positioning the aircraft as a lower-cost, lower-noise alternative to helicopters for time-critical freight in locations where trucks, ships, and conventional aircraft cannot easily reach.
The Velo completed a piloted transition flight — taking off vertically, converting to wing-borne flight, and landing vertically — in April. The aircraft then demonstrated that maneuver publicly at the Farnborough Airshow for five consecutive days in front of roughly 140,000 attendees, according to Michael Cervenka, Chief Commercial and Strategy Officer at Vertical Aerospace.
In its battery-electric variant, the Velo flies at 150 miles per hour and covers ranges of 50 to 60 miles. A hybrid variant incorporating a gas turbine range extender can push that envelope to more than 1,000 miles for cargo and defense missions, Cervenka said. Vertical Aerospace is pursuing certification with the U.K. Civil Aviation Authority, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.
To reach certification, the company will build seven test aircraft — two non-flying airframes to validate structural integrity and five dedicated to a rigorous flight test campaign. Construction begins next year, with flight testing running through 2027 and 2028. Each new aircraft type requires a certification program costing $1 billion to $2 billion or more, Cervenka noted, which is a core reason the company designed a single flexible platform to serve passenger, cargo, and defense markets rather than developing separate aircraft for each.
“Anything that you fly is never going to compete with the cost or the payload capability or the volumes that you can ship with trucks. I think it can supplement and grow the helicopter opportunity, and it can certainly give the ability to deploy high-value urgent cargo really where you haven’t got infrastructure and where the cost and the environmental footprint, particularly things like noise and safety, become really important,” said Cervenka.
On noise — a persistent barrier to helicopter adoption in populated or sensitive areas — Cervenka said the all-electric Velo generates roughly the sound of a loud conversation while hovering and the equivalent of a dishwasher in cruise. The absence of combustion engines also eliminates much of the maintenance burden that makes helicopter operations costly. The company sees dispersed defense logistics, organ transport, humanitarian response, and ship-to-shore delivery as priority cargo use cases, in addition to passenger air taxi service that would launch first.
Cervenka drew a parallel to wide-body freighter conversions to explain the platform strategy: just as Boeing and Airbus passenger jets get a second life as cargo aircraft, the Velo is designed so operators can carry passengers during the day and freight overnight, maximizing asset utilization. As battery technology improves, the same airframe could scale from four to five or six passengers — or carry progressively heavier cargo payloads — without requiring a new certification program.
- Velo completed its first piloted transition flight in April and flew publicly for five days at Farnborough Airshow before ~140,000 attendees
- Hybrid cargo variant can reach 1,000+ miles; battery-only version covers 50–60 miles at 150 mph, with commercial service targeted from 2030
- Seven certification aircraft to be built starting next year, with flight testing through 2027–2028 and regulatory approval sought from the CAA, EASA, and FAA
